#Corel to 3ds2

I am trying to find out why I cannot render at 640×480 things that I have
traced in Corel Draw and exported as .DXF files. Once I loft then in 3ds2
they will only render at 320×200. Am I doing somthing wrong or is there a
reason that this cannot be done?

Can you render ANYTHING at 640×480? 3D Studio will render anything at any
resolution you can display AND, by setting your configuration to NULL
display, it will render much higher than you can ever even hope to display!
Please let me know in more detail what your hardware / driver configuration
is, and we can probably get you going rather quickly.
BTW, are you rendering single frames or animations? Targas or Flics? and
how are you displaying the results?

Here's what I'm doing. Most of my work is in front end logos for
commercials and instructional video's. I took a graphic scanned at 1200dpi
(I think it was interpolated from 600dpi) pulled it into corel and traced
it. I am using a cardinal 732 card with one meg. Windows is set up at
640×480 large fonts. On this project I have only gotten as far getting my
wire frame togrther and finding the right texture and color so I am
rendering to my screen. Once I get this together I will fly the logo. Then
it goes to my studio to be put on MII. If I make a wire in 3ds2, no problem
getting my 640×480 on the VGA screen. Just can't get it up using files
converted in Corel. I set the driver to RCPADI. I'm sure I am over looking
something. Suggestions?

When you say wire, I assume you mean the display (work) screen – the one
with four boxes and menus. The default display screen is 640×480, while
the rendering screen is 320×200. I'm not real familiar with the cardinal
732 card. Is it VESA compatible? If so you don't need to buy anything
else. If not, go with either of the companies Martin suggested in his
reply for the driver. Both are about equal in my opinion (any comments on
that, people?).
When you say 'goes to my studio', what do you mean? Do you have a
framebuffer for 24 bit output there? (Again, I assume so). A problem you
will have is that the output from a 24 bit graphics card is very different
from what you will see at 8 bits (256 colors). AND, it is VERY different
from an NTSC output card! If you are serious about your video output, get
a cheap 24bit NTSC output card and hook it up to a TV set when you are
working with your materials and sample renderings. This will save MUCHO
anguish in the studio.
But to answer your question, you first must answer mine from last message –
Can you render ANYTHING out to higher resolution? You keep talking about
your hi-res Corel stuff, but what I need to know is can you see anything
else? Call up robotarm.3ds (comes with package) and hit render. What do
you get? Whatever you see will be the same as what you see with your Corel
files, I'll bet!
Look over the IPG (installation & performance guide) for the video driver
installation section, and especially the protected mode rendering drivers.

Do you have an ADI driver for 3d Studio? You will not be able to render to
any higher than standard vga which is 320x200x256 colours if you are don't
have the drivers and if you don't have a super vga card. The following 2
companies sell ADI drivers that support most svga cards:
Panacea: (800)729-7420 or (603)437-5022
Vibrant: (800)937-1711 or (512)250-1711
This is all explained in the installation and performance guide which ships
with 3ds.
