I am having problems with 3D Studio network rendering. I am using
the standard "noise_i.sxp" which ships with 3D Studio R4 to create a
cloud-like texture which is assigned to a flattened dome over my
model to simulate a sky. This is a very convincing way to make a sky
with random cloud patterns (thus the use of the noise_i.sxp process).
In order to make the clouds the proper size in the model, I adjusted
the "size" of the noise_i.sxp process within its own dialog box in
the materials editor. When the model is rendered locally, the
results are predictable and and the cloud-like pattern is at a
believable scale. However, when the model is rendered to the
network, the "size" of the noise_i.sxp process appears to return to
its default scale, and the cloud-like pattern is horribly tiny.
I have tried a number of things to try to remedy this problem, but
nothing yet has proven successful.
1) I moved all of the textures and processes to network drives. each
"slaved" machine has no textures or processes locally, and all have
the appropriate map-paths assigned to the network map and process
directories.
2) I reinstalled 3D Studio R4 on all slaved machines useing the
recommended minimal installation for slave machines.
3) I adjusted the "SET_IPAS_RDONLY" command to "YES" to see if this
solved the scaling problem.
4) All machines used are Compaq Pentiums @ 60Mhz (Three machines are
66Mhz) and all of them have 40 MB of RAM (Three have 32 MB).
I don't know what else to try, but I definately need a solution.
Try this, Mark:
Instead of forcing all your machines to access one set of IPAS routines from
the server (if I understood you correctly), try installing all your IPAS
processes on each slave, editing the .SET files so eash slave can see ONLY it's
OWN IPAS directory, and NO other.
It worked for me…

I am not sure what the problem is with your network rendering, but I am going
to set up a test project here in Product Support to check it out. Please let me
know if you have any further information that I can use.
