#Transformation Info?
4 messages in this thread
The project I'm currently working on requires raytraced images. What I've
been doing is using 3D Studio to create objects and manipulate them into a
scene. I then port an ASCII save file to the format required by my
raytracer. Unfortunately, textures and image/bump maps are not carried
over. I have to re-define them manually for the raytracer. While it isn't a
difficult job to create a texture for the raytracer, it is very difficult
to map an image onto the objects in the scene acurately. This is because I
have no information regarding the absolute transformations of an object
with respect to the origin. My raytracer initially places imagemaps at the
origin and then requires a transformation of the imagemap to its final
location.
Well, after that long-winded explanation, here is my question: Is there a
way to get 3D Studio to tell me what absolute transformations have been
applied to an object on an object by object basis?
Thanks,
Danny…
Sorry Danny… there isn't any straightforward way to pick up that
information from the .3DS file, since the quaternion interpreter is on the
3DS side, and the ascii file doesn't have any of that info in it. You can
get relative transformation info from the .vue file, but I don't think
that's going to help you much.

What about getting the info from within 3D Studio? Is there any way of
keeping track of absolute motion with respect to the axis?
How about creating a two frame animation and saving a .vue file. The first
frame contains the object at the origin, and the second frame contains the
same object in its final position and orientation. This relative data
contained in the .vue file should actually contain the absolute
transformation of the object. Does that make sense?
Danny…
It's possible, but you'd have to experiment to see if it gave you the
numbers you needed. Be my guest!
