#Exabyte Rendr Settings

Yost Group,
I needed some help on the settings for going to Exabyte tape to Abekas Recorder
to tape for broadcasting on TV. Resolution? Aspect Ratio? Able to render to
fields? Or anything else I should know.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

It's been a long time since I've dumped anything out to an Abekas, so my
memory's a bit rusty… The res is 756×486, but I forget what the pixel aspect
ratio is. (I'm sure that someone else on the forum has this info.) Re
fields… of course!

Aspect ratio can be determined by (Height/Width) * 1.3333. So, for 756×486 you
would get an aspect ratio of .8571

Abekas YUV format is 720 X 486 for NTSC and 720 X 576 for PAL .
Field mode is 720 X 243 or 720 X 288 .

Its actually 720×486 at .901 aspect. If you don't have it you'll need a
conversion program to go from Targa or whatever file type you render to YUV.
Elastic Reality markets one and Greg Pyros does as well, I believe that the
Pyros Version has a file header and the Abacus needs raw format.

Thanks for the response. I have the ASDG driver and renting a an EXABYTE 8500.
I also need a SCSI device, I think I'm going to get a ADAPTEC 1522. So, is
that everything I need?
As far as rendering, I am rendering to Targa, 720×486 at .901 aspect, with the
Null device on, rendering to fields. (In Targa compressed mode)
Does that sound OK. From what I understand, this will only work with EXABYTE
85xx's series tape drives, not 8200. Is that right?

Hi Mike,
I'm not Greg, but I understand the confusion. I left that "Greg?" in case he
wanted to comment on whether his converter had a file header or not, the demo
version does.

The 8500 is the best way to go. The 8505 is compatible but the site has to have
a special driver and alot of places just don't bother to get it. The 8500 is
_the_ standard.

All that sounds good. I haven't tried compressed mode but it should work. You
might call ASDG just to make sure.
No it won't work with 8200's.
If you're interested there's a company in California which sells them very
inexpensively called CSC. They're a bulk overstock buyer. $1395 internal and
$1495 external for the 8500 new with full warranty. This is not a sale, but you
can't always count on whether they have them in stock or not. One of the best
investments I ever made. Almost as much fun as a PAR. CSC #408-734-3475

Good one! But the truth is that AR number is per CCIR so I didn't calculate it.
Still I didn't look at it the way you did. Very funny. 🙂 Hey I can relate to
Pentiums, I can't do floating point division either. <BG>

Our program is being used by many to take 3DS files straight out to the Abekas,
so the format has a good chance of being correct! <bg> Remember, we worked
directly with Abekas to develop the BXP program. I've been told that it works
equally well with the Accom units, but I haven't tried that one myself.
But it's definitely the only way to both read and write YUV files directly from
within 3D Studio!

Fair enough Greg, that's why I wanted to give you the opportunity to speak up.
I think your program does have file headers but they must be nested in such a
way, that its not a problem. News to me. Abekas said you couldn't do that. I
tried reading the demo images with the ASDG YUV drivers and they wouldn't read
them. The ASDG doesn't care what size the image is. But on the other hand I
couldn't get the Ill Pro to read the ASDG files either, so I have no idea why
one works and the other doesn't or why they don't work together.
