Can we possibly get past this tired old mechanical "standard recorded answer"
mode for a second. I've been using AutoCad for over nine years
now, and I'm a veteran of the AutoCAd Forum, so I'm use to these types of
answers from Adesk employees.
I was sent over here to get more specific answers from the AutoCad forum, and I
really don't want to have to call our regional Adesk people here in Dallas
again to get information. You and I both know Adesk has Beta releases of
Win/95, so all I'm trying to find out is what has been observered so far. I've
been talking to Win/95 Beta users and I'm hearing disturbing reports about it's
ability to emulate DOS windows, while on the other hand I'm hearing that Win/NT
3.5 has an excellent dual boot option that sets up a great DOS machine outside
the NT environment on the same machine.
So, the question is simple and can be answered "officially".
If I boot up Win/NT 3.5, using it's dual boot feature, and chose to boot up as
a DOS machine will 3DStudio launch and run like these other DOS programs are
reportedly doing? I'm NOT talking about runing inside NT, I'm talking about the
separate DOS bootup option.
This is critical to us since I've heard that Win/95 Beta is not doing as good a
job with it's DOS emulation as this dual boot feature in Win/NT right now. I am
considering buying a NT upgrade to try this. If this will work we can look at
buying Acad 13/NT onstead of AutoCad 13/Win.

Yes

Jeremy,
Thanks for the answer!
RE
If you boot the machine and select DOS, that's exactly what you get. In fact,
you won't even see the NT stuff as it lies on a separate hard disk partition
(provided you installed it in its default configuration). No portion of NT is
loaded and as far as you're concern, you don't even know you have NT until you
boot and select NT. You basically have two totally different operating systems
on your hard disk and the ability to select what you want to boot.
Note that Win95.99987351 does not "emulate" dos. As of today (I don't know what
they will do in the next 4 years 'till they ship the thing) Win95 is just a
biffed-up version of Windows for Workgroups. It sits on top of DOS just like
today's version. There are many differences but mostly cosmetics. When it comes
to core system, it's basically the same. The "DOS" sitting down below (they are
probably going to release it alone as DOS 7) has the same structure and same
behaviors. In fact, you can still make up your own config.sys and autoexec.bat,
load QEMM and do everything you do with 3.1. Again, this can all change as this
is way too early in the game.
Hi Gus,
>>Note that Win95.99987351 does not "emulate" dos<<
That's funny! I like the significant figures part<VBSEG>.
I was talking to a Win/95 Beta tester and he said that he was having problems
with his DOS apps, that he was not seeing with Win/NT 3.5. This is what got me
thinking why not just get AutoCAD 13/WIn/NT and boot up with the DOS boot for
3DStudio…hey what a concept!
I'm so damn sick and tired of these 64K heaps, limited resources, and GPF's
I'm about to throw up, and Win/95 doesn't sound like it is going to help as
much as I want…assuming I ever see it in my life time<g>. I was considering
OS2\Warp but I'm not sure I'd like that over NT.

Hi Rod,
<< I'm hearing that Win/NT 3.5 has an excellent dual boot option that sets up

FWIW. It doesn't set up a new DOS environment but it allows to boot from the
DOS environment that was present when you installed NT. If during the
installation of NT you do not have DOS installed(or it's corrupt/incomplete)
then you will not get the option for a DOS boot.

Jonas,

Ok. Thanks I'll remember that, but what about fresh installs of NT on new
machines in the future. Would I have to always install whatever version of DOS
there is before I install NT… everytime (>:)? ( or until Yost develops a
non-DOS version of 3DStudio)
Rod…..(<:)
I am using this setup now to test some new software, running NT with duel boot
option to dos.
3DS runs fine, but 3DS will not work under a NT/DOS shell 🙁
Brandon
Brandon,
Great! Just what I wanted to hear.
This means I don't have to wait until the ALMIGHTY MICROSOFT decides to release
Win/95 (96?). I can order AutoCad13/Win/NT and go to NT workstations instead
of the Win/3.11 we have now. I'll have to check on how Lantastic works with
NT, but I think that interface is already there if I've read correctly.
This could be perfect since NT has been out for a while, and there appear to be
plenty of drivers available for it.
Yep, I think I;m going to like this!
Rod……(<:)
Rod,
It looks like you got some answers, but since you addresed your questions to
me, I will pitch in as well.

This being the case, you should know the standard answer to this. Under no
circumstances will I, any product support representative, or SYSOP/TM on the
forum talk about unreleased products. We are just simply not allowed to. I'm
sorry, but that is the way it is. There are, indeed, other departments that
have a little more freedom in this matter, but we are not one of them.
On to your questions,,,
<<If I boot up Win/NT 3.5, using it's dual boot feature, and chose to boot up

In this scenario, you are using DOS. DOS works. You are not running under NT,
so my response "3DS does not run under NT" does not apply.
<<You and I both know Adesk has Beta releases of Win/95, so all I'm trying to

How can I intellegently give you an answer to this? Yes, I am sure Autodesk has
copies of WIN/95 also. I don't have one, but that is a moot point. The whole
point of being a BETA release is to allow developers to try and clean up
problems. Whatever problems may or may not exist now, are certainly being
addressed by developers, and will hopefully be fixed for the actual release.
Until that actual release exists, there is absolutely no way to talk
intellegently about the behavior of our products and that software.

Some attitude there.

ACad 13 comes with licenses for DOS, Win 3.1, and NT in the same package. The
NT version isn't included on the current shipping ACad package, but should be
released soon.
Tim,
>>Some attitude there<<
Yes, I know. It has developed over the years, but believe me it has been fosted
by some pretty ripe remarks from Adesk commentators on the AutoCAd Forum.
Normally though I have had to side with Adesk on many of the issues, and
actually I do know exactly what Brian is saying, but I'm in a position that I
need some answers and I was hoping he might make a small exception to the rules
and at least give some small legal hints. I've managed to get a few over the
years on the Autocad Forum that were very helpful.
>>ACad 13 comes with licenses for DOS, Win 3.1, and NT in the same package<<
Yes, I know. What I should have said was.>.we will request the NT platform,
when I order Acad 13, as I have been instructed by my dealer.
