I am attempting to use the Cyberspace Developer Kit to develop a commercial game. I am very impressed with the capabilities of the kit, especially in the area of physically based animation. We are using Metaware C and the Phar Lap extender and developing for the DOS market. I have three questions regarding Cyberspace: 1. We are using models created with Autodesk 3D Studio 3.0 and animating them with Cyberspace. When reading in the 3d Studio objects, they loose their bitmaps (texture maps). Can anyone tell me how to get the 3d Studio texture maps to be recognized or to program my own texture maps. 2. I have used 640 x 480 x 8 bit and 640 x 480 x 24 bit VESA output successfully. I would like to also support 320 x 200 x 8 bit standard VGA output. How can this be done? 3. Will the newly released Cyberspace 2 for Windows NT produce executables which can run under other platforms, such as Windows 95 or WFW 3.11? Thank you. Jeff Berezin C++ Programmer Syracomp, Inc. Can anyone tell me how to get the 3d Studio texture maps to be recognized or to program my own texture maps.<<<< The display classes that ship with CDK Rel 1 did not include support for texture maps directly, although the capability exists to write your own with the use of the texture calls that are provided. The Future Vision Technologies Saphire Board uses them to achieve texture mapping with the CDK display class they provide with their board. They are the only ones I know of that provide a CDK display that supports texture mapping already using Rel 1. You could certainly create your own, as they did. Just for the record the new 3DS reader in Rel 2 does support reading in the textures from 3DStudio and they are supported in at least the WinG display that comes out of the box. The Rendermorphics CDK class can also handle textures under Rel 2, but you have to purchase the library separately. >>>>>>>2. How can this be done?<<<<<<< The only publically available ways to do this that I know of are in our Virtual Environment NAVIGATOR Tools. There are two possible display solutions at 320 X 200…. We provide MGMCGA.EXE (a TSR) that allows the standard CDK VESA display to output at 320 X 200 X 8 bit mode. We have also created another display class for CDK Rel 1 which is called MGVGA. It can be run at both 320 X 200 X 8 bit and 640 X 480 X 8 bit mode in wireframe, hidden wireframe, shaded, shaded with colored wireframe, and shaded with black wireframe modes. It also supports wireframe, flat, Gouraud and Phong shading modes. It is a bit faster than the CDK VESA display and avoids the dithered look for 8 bit shading. It is a standard CDK Rel 1 display which inherits from CyDisplay3D (that's the Rel 2 base class name, but it think it was the same in Rel 1 wasn't it? It's late….) Textures are in the works, as always….it seems….WE have them up in our lab, but it's not released yet. Still some issues to resolve. Just can't get to it all. >>>>3. It runs with Win32S so Windows 95 should work but I haven't seen it yet. I hope this is a little more information. Let us know if we can do anything more to help. Hi Angela, << CDK answers… >> I noticed that Angela Pate claimes that we run under Windows NT 3.1. While we may run under it, WinG is not fully supported in NT 3.1, hence CDKRender is not functional under Windows NT 3.1. Kevin

To Kevin via Jonas? Hi Kevin, Nice to see you here. Thanks for the clarification about WinG not working under Windows NT 3.1. I did forget that one. But Rendermorphics and Hoops should function just fine, is this true? By the way, when are you guys going to get your own account <g>? Thanks for all your great energy with Rel 2. Angela

Apparently, the WinG libraries from MS aren't available on platforms other than Intel. Although I do hear rumors that platform support for WinG from MS maybe expanded in the future. So for now, Windows 3.1 and NT 3.5 on Intel boxes. We had Rendermorphics and HOOPS running under NT 3.1 at one time, but I don't think we did any final testing with NT 3.1. Do you think there there people out there running NT 3.1 that aren't going to upgrade to NT 3.5? -Kevin

As with CDK R1, CDK R2 for Windows has a group of C++ classes designed to address the challenge of distributed simulation called DSCVR (which stands for Distributed Shared Cyberspace Virtual Representation). With that said, the big "win" we are interested in w.r.t. CDK and networking is Windows 95. With built-in support for networking, we believe that Win95 will be a much better platform to pursue networked VR apps, than Windows 3.1 today. In short, I think we'll be able to do a much more powerful implementation w.r.t. networking in the future than we have done to date. <<will CDK ver 2.0 support datagloves of any kind>> Support for two data gloves is offerred with CDK R2- the VPL glove and the Virtual Technologies glove. <<thanking you in anticipation.>> You're welcome! -K
