#ProWrite and Deskjet

I have a new HP DeskJet500C, and am using ProWrite (3.2) for basic word
processing tasks. My problem is with the HP's internal fonts: I can't seem to
access them. My printer driver is the HP_DeskJet500 driver by Lance
Kibblewhite, DL'd from CIS. Using ProWrite's print menu, I can use either the
bitmap (or CG outline) fonts, or dump my text directly to the HP, using the
panel font (which I believe is Courier 12). I'd like to access the other
built-ins, like CGTimes (which looks really nice). Using the Amiga's "Times"
font, even CGTimes, the output is nowhere near as good. In addition, I can't
seem to find a font which is the same size as the HP's Courier12 panel font.
I've tried Pica and Elite (WB standard fonts), but they don't match; therefore
I can't even get true 'WYSIWYG'
To fix the latter problem would be a start…at least I would know what my
printouts are going to look like!
ProWrite's "Internal Font Number" selector has no effect on output, it just
uses the same font every time.
ANY help would be greatly apreciated…I bought this printer beacuse of the
great printouts (OK because of the price, too).

I'm using PICA-11 and printing with from PW with Quality: NLQ. This gets
me Courier output, but I haven't been able to use any other built-in
fonts. 🙁
There are other printer driveers (SuperDJ and Wolf Faust's Studio) that
are supposed to help access other fonts, but I doubt this would be using a
WYSIWYG Pro-Write screen or anything (how do they work?)…

The Courier 12 panel font on your deskjet is 12 pitch not 12 point. Our Elite
font was designed to closely match the internal 12 pitch fonts in printers.
When we designed multiple pitches into ProWrite we used the pica pitch as the
standard and tied that into the width of the Topaz 11 font (8 pixels) The elite
font would be perfectly WYSIWYG if we had access to a 6.66 pixel wide screen
font unfortunately we do not. Our Elite font is a comprimise at 7 pixels in
width but this comprimise carries with it a degree error. Turning on the
"Optimal Spacing" option with cause ProWrite to mix Pica and Elite spaces to
achieve the best possible results. We decided on this method of formatting
documents to allow people to Mix pitches in the same document.
Because the Printer Driver/ Printer.device mechanism used on the Amiga
has no provision for reporting spacing tables back to the program we
have chosen to support only the Mono spaced internal fonts in the NLQ
or Draft modes so that we can be assured of consistant formatting.
Using Topaz 11 or Pica 11 and printing in NLQ or Draft will access
your internal 10 pitch courier font and will print exactly as you see
it on the screen WYSIWYG.
Ok…with your help I should be able to coax WYSIWYG out of the DJet. Now,
about those fonts…
There are only one or two word processors available on the Amiga with the
capabilities to use the fonts internal to the printer. One is called
WordsWorth and I forget what the other one is, if it exists! (great memory
here)
Thanks everyone for the help. Another solution I thought of would be
to use a text formatter that would account for the size of the text,
save it as a regular text file, then dump it out to the DJ with a
utility like DJ_PRINT, available online. This util can access all
the internals, and works great for dumping regular text. just an
idea…

Protext? It's the one I use. When it comes to accessing the internal
printer fonts it is unmatched! Shame it's not wysiwyg though.
