We have a problem with the configuration on 3D Studio Release 3. We are running on two 486/50 Mhz with 32Mb of RAM. We have tried running on DrDOS 6.0 and we are presently running on MSDos 6.02. The system is networked with Novell lite. When we load 3D Studio from DOS the program takes an eternity to access. Once we are in the programme it takes forever to change from any of the modules to the materials editor. We are also unable to run Autodesk Aniplay from DOS Shell without it seeming to page the disk. We have tried taking everything out of the Config.sys and the autoexec.bat. Since we have changed to MSDos 6.02 (and configured the memory using `Memmaker') we are getting an error when we try to access Autodesk Animator Play of the following: "Phar lap err 35: the 386 chip is curently executing in virtual 80/86 mode under the control of another program you must turn off this other programme in order to use 386|DOS-extender to run in protected modes." It seems we have a major memory allocation conflict somewhere but we are unable to pinpoint the problem. CAN ANYONE HELP??? WE ARE DESPERATE FOR A SOLUTION!!!! Alan [D [D [D [D/exit \exit

Alan: You have a memory problem! 3DS is not compatible with whatever memory manager you are using, that is whyit is swapping to disk immediately. Go into 3DS and type "?" to see the amount of memory thta 3DS 'sees'. Use another memory manager, or none at all. QEMM works great! Greg Pyros

Alan I have no experience of drdos or MsDos 6 (I use MSDos 5), the only time I have seen the symptoms you describe was when re-loading 3DSR3 when I was shelled out i.e. running it twice! your problem could be mem-maker not releasing enough memory for 3DS. Try running your machines bare, that is with no memory management. Once your Netware light drivers are loaded this will only leave 300-400 K of ram but this should not worry 3DS it will use either extended or expanded ram. If this works then either a command line switch to make mem-maker relinquish control to Phar-Lap is needed or go and buy QEMM. If this does not work then fax me your Config.sys Autoexec.bat & startnet.bat and we will talk tomorrow – fax 071-480-6811

Greg, Grahame, Thanks for your quick reponses, as regards to memory managers, I am currently running without any memory managers installed whatsoever and my problem is still around. When I first go into Studio and do a "?" it says I do not have any SWAP files or page faults and that I do have 32 megs (approx) available. Does this give you any clues ???.

I'm currently using 3DS r3, AniPro, ACAD r12, etc. using DR DOS 6.0, ('have been ever since it came out). I have had no problems whatsoever, using its basic memory managers set up in the default installation configuration. No network yet, but DR DOS shouldn't be the source of your problem.

Thanks to Grahame from Magic Lantern, we seem to have pin pointed the problem, we decided to change from using the vista VDPADI and went onto using VistaH and that cured our speed problem. We were using a Trident VGA card. Thanks to all who tried to help.
