#DRM-604X / CDD521 — declared parent_msg_num=(none), resolved parent_id points to #(none)
I notice in you list of supported devices for Corel SCSI Pro that you support
the Pioneer DRM-604 CD ROM changer under Netware 3.11. Does this support allow
users to select one of the six CDs in the Pioneer from their workstation?
Also, does your support of the Phillips CD Recorder include any facilities for
recording (i.e. creating) MCDEX compatible discs? Thanks. Bill Dieckmann

The Phillips driver only lets the Phillips software talk to the drive and
vice-versa. It's Phillips' own software that does the recording, formatting,
etc.
The 604X, while networkable, isn't one I'd like on a big network since it
can only load and play one of the six disks at a time. Two users can't use two
different disks, for example, but both could access the same loaded disk (and
possibly get into an electronic tug of war changing them!).

Thanks for the response. The 604 might just work out for us then, since we
need only occasional access to a few CDs by about 4 or 5 users. I suppose from
your description of how the Phillips 521 drive works with over the network it's
probably not possible to record a CD due to the requiement for a constant
uninterrupted 300 Kbyte/second transfer to the recorder. The workstation
hosted software we are currently using has a hard enough time doing this from
its local drive. I doubt a non-idle file server would keep up. Thanks again!

I think you're right not to try the Phillips on a network. Among other
things, it takes a great deal of time to prepare the material thus locking up a
machine and its hard disk in uninterruptable work for quite some time, and the
entire CD must really be composed and assembled on hard disk and then tested
before being written to disk.

Jack: Thanks for your comments. The phillips drive is VERY slow as a reader, so
there's even less reason to network it!

Bill,
Your users can map to one or to all six CD if they like! It will depend on
what sort of access you want to give them. The Philips recorder is supported.
This means that you can write to it and have any standard ISO 9660, High Seirra
CD ROM reader read the produced media. It is quite flexible, you should enjoy
it.

If you read the posted apology you will understand the tardiness of my
response.
Just to add something to this that I forgot. The CorelSCSI Pro, or Network
Manager (avail. end of December) software has a caching scheme that is ideally
suited to the Pioneer '6-pack'. We utilize anywhere from 0 MB to the total
space of a Network volume as HD cache. Information read from platter one is
cached on the HD. This means that while user two is reading platter 2, user
three (who wants to access the information that user one just did) can get it
from hard drive.
The read-a-head option also ensures that more information than is read, is
cached. The overall performance of this system allows multiple users to run
multi-media application without lag in sound or motion !!!
