#Vibrant driver problem
30 messages in this thread
I just recived ver. 4 upgrade, installed it, ran 3ds vibcfg, and my
card was not listed. The card I have is the Orchid Kelvin 64, it was
avalible in ver. 3 vibrant updates but not in ver.4. I would like to
use my board under its fully capacity instead of VESA mode. If this
is has been fixed please send me the driver for ver. 4.
what version of the vibrant drivers do you have? To find this out, run
"3ds vibcfg" and watch for the first message that comes up – it will
say the version number.
I have the one that came with ver. 4. I belive it is 1.0.5.P1
Chuck, I mean Gregg,
I have 1.0.4.c3 and it included kelvin 64 support. It might be in the libraries
unless Vibrant deleted it. Vibrant must have taken it out for some reason. Lord
knows why. Maybe it didn't work, or Orchid annoyed them.
Thanks, sorry about the Chuck thing but this is a Graphix Zone account
with Chucks name on it. By the way, how is work at Virgin going..
Keep in touch
Gregg,
>> sorry about the Chuck thing but this is a Graphix Zone account with Chucks

no problem, I was just teasing <g>. As long as you sign your name at the bottom
(which you always do) then it doesn't matter.
Things are going fine at Virgin. I'm working at home at the moment, though,
until my system that I ordered comes in.
If you really need the Vibrant support for the Kelvin, I think I have the files
you need. I could e-mail them, if you'd like…
Yes please E-Mail them to me at this address. 75300,161. Im in the process of
getting my own compuserve account so that I dont have to go through the Graphix
Zone anymore..

Gregg,
>> Yes please E-Mail them to me at this address. 75300,161. <<
will do. Look for it by Monday.
>> system that I ordered comes in. <<
Whajagit? Whajagit? Huh?….
Wade,
>> Whajagit? Huh? <<
The hardware I asked for: Pentium 90 PCI m/b (Intel Neptune Chipset),
32mb RAM, Diamond Stealth 64 w/ 4mb VRAM, 2gb Seagate Barracuda
hardrive, 4x cd-rom, 21" monitor (NEC or Sony), 16-bit sound card,
Wacom UD12 tablet, DAT backup DDS-2, etc. Software: 3dsr4, Yost IPAS
collection 4-7, Ani Pro, Photoshop, Fractal Design Painter and some
utility stuff. Hopefully that's about what I'll get 🙂
<< DAT backup DDS-2 >>
What is DDS-2? I'm unfamiliar w/ that. Plus I'm surprise there's no
PAR or MAX in there somewhere. Will you be using someone else's? PC?
MAC? Hope you don't mind my curiosity.
>> What is DDS-2? << A new standard for DAT backups, I think.
>> no PAR or MAX in there somewhere. Will you be using someone else's?

another member of the team already has a Radius Videovision and Adobe
Premiere so he'll probably be doing that type of work.
Just use the older version of the drivers. The 1.0.5 drivers that ship with R4
also don't work with a Diamond Stealth 24 for some reason. But the older
drivers work just fine. I use 1.0.3 with no problems.
Dave Mennenoh
The Vibrant drivers that ship with R4 are version 1.05. The Kelvin is
not listed in that version of the drivers.
As you may have heard, support for the Kelvin was at one point in the
1.04 drivers, however a few cards were removed from the list because
they were found to be unstable. Only the 1.05 version of the drivers
is officially supported.
If you can get a hold of the earlier drivers, you might see if it
works for you. However, as you have found out, they are not on the
forum because they are not a supported version of the drivers.
Brian, a number of cards seem to be suddenly dropped from the new
drivers in R4. I just read that an ATI MACH32 user has encountered
total incompatiblity, whereas, previously, everything was fine. If i
save the previous drivers version will that be the proper workaround,
and not cause other unforseen problems? As several of us are waiting
for our R4, and we use both Diamond STealth and ATI MACH32, this is
somewhat disconcerting. Additionally, I always had a minor
incompatibility with my ATI Card. Before leaving 3-DS I have to
render a blank screen at 320×200 or my screen will scramble when i
launch other SVGA applications. Trying a number of fixes, mem
excludes and what not, never did find a solution other than the above
work-around. Asked directly to Jonas and a few others at Autodesk and
never received a solution. Also, a member of my team uses an ATI 64
bit card and has to reset entire system when he leaves 3-DS.
Yes, you should save your prior video configuration, just in case.
Copy the vibrant files somewhere else or rename them so when they are
overwritten, they are not lost. If those versions work better for
you, fine. Please remember, though, that that the 1.05 version of the
Vibrant drivers are the only version officially supported.
Brian, thank you for your prompt reply. I understand that 1.05 version
is the only version officially supported. Don't you think it wise
that some sort of advice be included to upgraders regarding the
possible dissappearence of their video card support from within 3-DS.
This is going to cause a number of very anxious moments out there,
and possibly very critical downtime for those unaware of their video
drivers files being "DOWNGRADED" unexpectedly. Some of these cards
which are not longer supported are very powerful and popular cards.
Additionally, it is awkward to see official support of only the most
current driver. I know this is an uncomfortable post to be writing,
but this entire R4 moment has been a bit uncomfortable.
Autodesk is looking at changing the 3DS4 install so that it does not
overwrite Vibrant drivers, and instead make backups of existing 3DS3
Vibrant drivers during the install. Thanks for letting us know.
In response to both your replies: <Probably Chuck Walbourn can address
this. He is often on this forum> Nik, this is a crucial issue. If you
do not already know the answer, can Vibrant be contacted and we, in
turn, advised? <Autodesk is looking at changing the 3-DS R4 install>
Most R3 upgraders will be doing so very shortly. Sounds like a time
bomb to me. We are talking about very popular cards here. I'll not
make any more noise right now. There are just too many little issures
cropping up surrounding R4. Awaiting info regarding drivers and
assuming from your response that Vibrant is not about to include these
boards and release an update quickly.
Nik will add to this thread, I'm sure. He's Autodesk's primary liason
between all of you and Vibrant and has been since the prerelease of
R3. Autodesk has been very sensitive to the fact that hundreds of new
video card choices are showing up in the market in regular intervals.
Nik has been collecting and will continue to collect all of the
Vibrant related threads that exist on this forum. He then summarizes
and forwards this to each company's management and engineering teams.
<< . I'll not make any more noise right now. >>
Just keep forwarding specific desired chipsets/color depths/and boards
to Nik.
Jonas, we are not talking about 100s of new video card choices, we are
talking about some of the most popular heavy graphics apps cards on
the market, that have been supported by 3-DS Vibrant up until now. I
am really not trying to escalate this into a fight. However, the
answers that I am getting are rather obtuse and irritating. Now, will
somebody please answer my very precise and specific questions: 1)
Does R4 Vibrant support ATI MACH32 and Diamond Stealth? 2) If not,
and I have to use previous Vibrant Drivers;
a) will I take a hit in performance in any of the areas of video
performance
i) this goes for render, screen redraws and realtime preview Thank you
for your attention in this crucial time Jeffrey
I'm not sure about which specific cards the drivers that come with r4
support, but I can DEFINITELY tell you that you won't take a
performance hit if you use an earlier version of vib3ds.vlm.
1000 thank U's Gary. This makes me happy, and i could upload a bank of
RAM SIMMS, but they may not be as precious to you as they are to me.
Almost rendered silent, finally, HAHAHAHAAHHA Jeffrey
Jeffrey,
ATI MACH 32 and the Diamond Stealth 24,32,64,VRAM,and PRO are all
supported in the 1.05 version. I hope this clears up any confusion.
-Brian
Brian, with regard to Vibrant Drivers and R4, I am now at peace and prepared.
Believe this string will be helpful to many, as there seemed to be too much
ambiguity. Thanks Jeffrey
Jeff, I'm a new guy to 3DS and the Forum. Your response to Brian
Rudolph concerns me. I currently have R3, awaiting an R4 upgrade. My
system utilizes an ATI Graphics Pro Turbo (64) card. Are you saying
I'm going to have problems with this card w/R4? By the way, there
are TWO versions of this card. An OEM card and a RETAIL version (both
cards have the exact same name and was very confusing when I bought
my machine, as the OEM version was installed, not the retail version
which approx $100 more). The retail version has additional ACAD
drivers (I'm really not sure for what). Like I said, sometimes I feel
"dumb as a stump", can't "talk-the talk" yet. Thanks, Jeff, you're my
first message!
Kevin, I dont know what cards will have problems with R4. Before you install R4
on your system save the current VIbrant Driver to another directory (VIB3DS.VLM
is the name of the driver file). Then, if you have problems, reinstall
VIB3DS.VLM from R3. My intention, was anything but further provocation of
worry. But as users send in their findings, one can only try and head off
problems before they occur.
Kevin, actually I just read the string under Mach64 help, and it appears R4
does supply drivers for your specific card and people are running just fine.
Take a stroll down to the string (I think it is the #20s or so) It should calm
you down… and *I* know how that feels.
Kevin,
The Mach 64 is fully supported. Don't worry, be happy.
-Brian
Kevin;
I have the OEM version of the ATI card with the Mach 64 chip and a PCI bus,
and it has the same problem with version 3 and 4 of 3DS. The problem it is two
fold. 1) it takes quite a while to get into 3DS, about 1.5 min. unless you use
a TSR that is here on this forum called ANITVESA.EXE which eliminates the vesa
calls for the ATI board. And 2) After working in 3DS the computer locks up if
I try to go into windows with re-booting first. The Vibrant drivers seem to
leave some stuff in the memory of the ATI card. Other then this you should not
have any problems between vers 3 and 4.
By the way, if you dealer is calling the OEM version of the ATI card by the
same name as the Retail version then they are misrepresenting the product
because ATI calls the OEM the WinGraphics Pro Turbo.
