#OS/2 — declared parent_msg_num=(none), resolved parent_id points to #(none)
I have been using QuickBooks (DOS) with OS/2 for over two years, no significant
problems, it's one of those rare software packages, it just works as advertised
and as expected.
Since Microsoft acquired, and as a result of the reported incompatibilities
between the most recent version of Quicken (Win) and OS/2 I have been concerned
that the Microsoft/Intuit would either eliminate the DOS version of QuickBooks
and/or render QuickBooks (Win) incompatible with OS/2.
So when I received the recent "offering letter" to "upgrade" to QuickBooks 3.0
I was not too surprised to find that there would be no further development of
the DOS version. However, when I called the order line to find out if this new
version would work with OS/2 I was (eventually) advised that "… QuickBooks
3.0 will not work with IBM's OS/2."
It really is too bad, obviously, users are being told what platform they will
need if they want to continue to use your products.

I agree. And why *won't* the new version run under OS/2?
I am disappointed to learn this. Too bad MS and Q are lovers now…we'll all
lose in the end.

Not to sound like a goodie-goodie but…
From what I understand QBW3 will work with os/2. I know some of the Quicken
Windows products had probs with os/2 but a patch available from IBM via their
BBS cured most of the problems. The patch fixed some problems with os/2 and not
the Intuit products.

Mr. Pitman.
I do not know what the OS/2 patch "fixed" which allowed Quicken Windows to
work with OS/2 did or does, but I do not believe that it was OS/2 which
required "fixing!"
OS/2 uses duely licensed and paid for Microsoft Windows code. Virtually all
Windows applications will work under Win-OS/2. I will not begin, nor be a
part of the debate as to whether they run as well or better in Win-OS/2 or
Windows, but run they will.
IBM found it necessary to modify code to accomodate your INTUIT's lack of
proper planning and testing, this was done to enable OS/2 users to continue
to use your product. Had INTUIT took the trouble to recognize the fact that
there are several million people who have actually chosen to PURCHASE and
use OS/2 (as opposed to being made to purchase Windows) and a rather large
subset of those also choose to purchase and use your companies product, they
would have tested the software properly and avoided the necessity of any
patches.
The fact that people are being told that QuickBooks Windows will not work
work under OS/2, and that a patch was necessary to enable Quicken Windows to
work under OS/2 makes me think that one of the "features" which made INTUIT
so attractive to Microsoft was these built in road blocks to OS/2 and the
abandonment of DOS product development.
In response to another who blithly dismisses this loss as only affecting OS/2
users. When any compnay becomes so powerfull that it can dictate what will
be used, what will be developed, what direction an industry will take and
what "It" or "It's" leaders beleive is "best" for the consumer, then we all
loose.
No, Mr. Pitman, you do not sound like a "goodie-goodie", rather just soemone
who is trying to put some "spin" on INTUIT's poor judgement, planning and poor
beta testing.

I don't think so. When one company begins to dominate in ALL the computer
world (and MS is big enough to encroach into so many areas – and is actually
doing it), *everyone* loses, not just OS/2ers.

Sounds like paranoia!

Shannon,
There is no need for you to continue to express your obvious bias towards MS.
Rather than attacking what you think we are thinking (in which you are
erroneous, by the way), why don't you contribute something more substantial,
and that deals with the issue being discussed.
But since you seem to want to divert from the issue, my guess is that you have
never even used OS/2.

On same token lay off the MS bashing, enough said.

Hardly the case. I have played with it since before it was ever released,
back in 1.0 days.

Dave,
I have no idea why it won't work under OS/2, and frankly do not wish to go
through the expense of trying to find out. The fact that virtually every
Windows application operates (albeit some better than others) work under
Win-OS/2 and that IBM pays a fee for the Microsoft Windows code included in
OS/2 makes me believe that the responsiblity lies with INTUIT. The either
deliberatley coded Quicken and QuickBooks so that they would not work and/or
chose to not select beta sites using OS/2.
Mr. Pitkin in another message maintains that IBM fixed OS/2 (via the patch)
so that it would work with Quicken. I suspect that the reality is that IBM
provided a patch corrects the problem(s) introduced by INTUIT, therby
ENABLING Quicken to work properly in Win-OS/2.
I most certainly agree with you, we all (OS/2 and non-OS/2 users) do loose in
a situation such as this. Microsoft has chosen to dictate what direction
product development will take. It has chosen to decide what is "best" for
us, under such circumstances the entire personal computer using "community"
looses.
