I'm a Tyro when it comes to computing..I would like to get into PowerBuilder and don't know where to begin. Is there antone in this area who can point me in the right direction?

Bruce, What's PowerBuilder?

Matt, PowerBuilder is a Client\Server program developer. Hottest on the market…I'm trying to learn it. Bruce

Gotcha.

Bruce, Try the PowerSoft forum. I'm sure they'd have plenty of info about PowerBuilder. –dkm

I found it last night by using the FIND function in WinCIM. Thanks… Bruce

I use it.

Ray, Really….? I find it fascinating…just trying the tutorial…Have you been to the PowerSoft forum? Bruce

I dislike it intensely, as I do most 4GLs. The problem is that it's very easy for me to think up a problem that outside the domain they're designed to solve. When that happens (and it usually happens when I'm trying to learn the stupid things) they just break down completely. For instance, I decided to do a simple little disk cataloger with PB and SQL Server. The database end is a snap but PB has no inherent way to read a directory off a diskette, i.e. no generic DOS interface routines. <Sound of $2K worth of software hitting the bottom of a metal trash can.>

if you are into Client/Server try Gupta SQLWindows (GO GUPTA). That's also a very good development toolkit (in my opinion better than powerbuilder).

I know about GUPTA but right now I have time for little extra..I am sure that I will need to know more soon. Thanks for the info.. Bruce

>> GUPTA << They're having a great promo right now. If you go to one of their road shows you get a free SQLWindows Solo. You'll meet lots of C/S types at these shows. >> I find it fascinating… << Can be fun, can also be a headache. Mike 🙂

Hi Mike, First I learn C++, then PowerBuilder, then Oracle, then GUPTA. Whew…. Bruce

>> First I learn C++, then PowerBuilder, then Oracle, then GUPTA. Whew….<< Good for you, now learn sockets and TCP/IP. With that you'll be all set to port DOOM over to UNIX! You can write your own networked renderer!

Hehe…sounds like a Migraine producer…I wrote a small C++ program and it ran….it's a long tedious process. I love DOOM Bruce

>> I love DOOM << At my work we spend significant amounts of time using DOOM as a "network bandwidth test" 🙂 DOOM is not a client/server program, it is strictly peer-to-peer. I'm not aware of any "real" client server games…hmm…another great marketing concept! (I seem to have great marketing concepts about as often as Windows95 crashes, and with about the same potential for success 🙂 >> I wrote a small C++ program and it ran…<< MicroSoft should hire you. May I ask what you eventually intend to produce? I'm guessing some C/S type game.

Nothing so esoteric..just Medical, Dental, and related software for networked offices. I never though I had the talent to think up a good playable game concept and then program it.

>> Medical, Dental, and related software for networked offices…<< Oh boy, we did one of those for infection control many moons ago (my wife was an Infection Control Practitioner, at the time). Lost our shirts too. Tough market, the medical field, no money 🙁

I don't plan to work for myself anymore…too much aggravation and stress. Bruce
