Hey, Can anyone tell me how much better and faster the render 24 is than the playmation render is? I have Playmation 2.07. Also has anyone used Playmation/Animation Master on a P90 or SGI, I'd like to know how much faster it is.

Ron, Really the only advantage to Render 24 is that it can be run as a dos network renderer… it's a little bit faster, but not enough to write home about…. as for the speed of A:M on a Pentium 90….. hold on to your shorts! 5-7 times faster than a 486DX50 and a little faster than an SGI Indy…. I know, we were pretty shocked too! Steve, Hash Inc

Hi, I am a new AM user. Just out of curiousity, how does the PowerMac 8100 fit in as far as rendering speed, in comparison the the p90 and the Indy? Also, does network rendering work cross-platform? In other words, if I purchased a Windows or an SGI license in addition to my PowerMac license, could the other platforms be render slaves to the PowerMac, at the same time? Thanks in advance, Jim Jonah P.S. was I the only one with a miss-labeled training tape?

Jim, yes you could render on different platforms… as for the speed of a PPC 8100 comared to our indy… I wouldn't know since we're not that lucky….all we have is a silly little 6100 but it comes pretty darn close to that P90 and would definitely make me think twice about buying an Indy…. you sure could buy a lot of PPCs or P90s with that kind of money…. Steve, >>as for the speed of a PPC 8100 comared to our indy… I wouldn't know since we're not that lucky….all we have is a silly little 6100 but it comes pretty darn close to that P90 << So, my 8100 should run circles around the Indy and the Pentium. Is there a discount for buying Animation Master on a second platform? (I own the PMac version, and possibly might need the regular Mac or the Windows version.) Thanks, Jim Jonah

Yes, Jim we do offer cross platform discounts, call the office 206-750-0042 and we can discuss it…. Steve, Hash Inc.

Make sure you use a Native engine for the PPC (is there one available?). It seems PPC's run regular mac software about the speed of a Mac II or slow Quadra and with no mathco support as of the latest emutator. I use a P-90 at home and Macs at work and it sure is amazing how fast Native PPC apps are being released compared to almost no Pentium optimized software. I guess developers really have to rewrite stuff for the PMAC since the emulation is so slow and Apple is migrating its entire line of systems to the new chips, but the pentuim runs old x86 stuff just fine and fast. Well, enough small talk. Good luck -Mitch

Basically, I'm planning ahead for the inevitable crunch that always happens with indecisive clients. I know I'll need a "render farm" and was trying to find out if I had PMacs, Indy's and Pentiums on the same network, one — could they all be slaves to the PMac and help out rendering the same project. Thanks for the input, Jim Jonah

Steve, Well you sold me on that one! I can't believe the P90 is even faster than the Indy. Thanks, you really helped me out alot. Ron

Ron- I test rendered a scene to compare Render24 with Windows render – it took windows just over an hour where it took render24 only 51 minutes. Not a huge difference but after hundreds of renders it adds up. As for speed, I'm using a 4/66DX2 and a P90. On average the P90 renders 2-3 times faster. Well worth the investment! -Kevin

Kevin, It sounds well worth it to me. With render24 and a P90 you could save some serious rendering time. Thanks alot. -Ron
