#import of states
8 messages in this thread
Hi,
I'm trying to use the import function in the states requester, but so far with
no luck. I have made a low res model and made several states to animate it.
Now I modelled a hi res model and used the same bones structure. I loaded both
in the detail editor and set the low res model to a state that I want to
import on my other model. In Pick Group mode I picked the parent object of my
new hi res model (so far only with a default state defined) and used import.
Now a requester asks me to pick an object. I select to parent object of the
low res model (the one with several states). After entering a new state name
and checking only the Grouping box in the following requester nothing happens.
I've been looking in the manual, but there is nothing about the import
function.
I tired the same by selecting the actual "skin object" of both objects, but
when I do this I get an error telling me that the objects have a different
strukture.
My two object are indentical (number, names and grouping of bones) only the
number of triangles is different.
Am I trying something thatAs not possible?
TIA

David,
You cannot have states composed of differing objects. For example….you
cannot import a sphere with 100 vertices into an sphere with only 50.
If you have a sphere with 100 vertices, then have a copy of that sphere that
you deformed (no vertices or faces removed or added), then you can import it as
a state. Impossible to have different object or group structures as states.

Greg,
I tried the same thing with identical objects. I loded the object twice in the
detail editor and tried to import one state to the other object, but still no
effect. Imagine accepts all inputs and creates the new state, but the the
object that I import to does not change at all. So basically it works, but
then it doesn't <g>
Have you ever succesfully imported a state from one object to the other? Maybe
you could do a indiot proove step by step description. Could be that I'm just
skipping a small but essencial step.

You load the same object into the detail editor twice. The object as it is has
several states already? The object you are importing from, do you set it so
that the state you want to import is active? <scratching head> Not sure I
quite follow what you are doing.

I have imported an object with no states, into another similar object AS a
state. I'll try out different variations, to see if there is a difference.

David,
Here's a step by step SIMPLE states import. Expand the concept for more
complex objects or groups of objects.
1) Add a Primitive sphere, accept defaults
2) Ralt-c, Ralt-p, F1 (Copy it, Paste it, select the copy)
3) Move the copy off to the side
4) Scale the copy in the Z direction (L-shift+z) about 50%
5) Select the first sphere. Select STATES, then CREATE, accept the DEFAULT
name. Click on the SHAPE box, then OK.
6) Select STATES (first sphere still selected), then IMPORT.
7) From the list select SPHERE.1 (the squashed copy)
8) Enter SQUASH for the state name, click on the SHAPE box, then OK.
9) Select STATES, click on SET TO, click on SQUASH….object now changes shape
10) Select STATES, click on SET TO, click on DEFAULT…object changes back
Thats all there is to it David. Pretty straight forward. Possible reason for
your confusion in your example: If you have an object "A" with several states
in it (1 & 2), and an object "B" with or without states, and you want to IMPORT
state A2 into B, you must first set object A to be displaying STATE A2.
Also, if the state you are importing has an object that is modified in shape,
you must click on the SHAPE box on the new imported state.
Hope one of the explanations in this message helps you.

GreG,
thanks very much. As I already said in my other message I found the missing
step <g>. So even if you have two boned models with different number of
triangles you can import states by picking the parent axis in group mode. and
import only the bones grouping and then "update bones".
I'm glad it works, since I made a complex anim with lots of states morphing.
But I use a low res model to be able to work and render faster. OTOH with the
quick stage function the "make anim" works almost in real time!!! 🙂

Greg,
Now I know what I did wrong. I was indeed skipping a small step. <g> The new
state is there I just forgot to use "set to state" to see the new state!!
<hitting with hand on forehead>
So now I can import the states that I made in my low res model to my hi res
model.

<shaking head> What are we gonna do with you David! <g>
