#Splitting Objects
21 messages in this thread
Just starting out with Imagine 3, and have a problem with splitting
objects – maybe you can give me some pointers on how to do it properly.
I have a complete human skeleton in Imagine (the mesh came from
The Graphics Alternative BBS – no source indicated, but its good, so maybe
Viewpoint or Mira – called skeleton.lzh on TGA). The skeleton contains 6
objects
– 2 legs, 2 arms, pelvis, ribcage+spine+skull. I need to split it apart, and
do
some serious deformations and rearrangings on it (new hobby, computer
vivisection! :-> ). I have been trying to split the ribcage+spine+skull, take
off the skull as a separate object. There is even a visible gap in the spine
below
the skull, to run the pick box or lasso through. But following the procedures
in the manual, I can't get anywhere, no 2 objects are ever created. Is there
something I am missing? Or does the procedure in tha manual need modifying
(p112 in the 1994 3.0 manual, "Split") ?
Any help will be appreciated,
Thanks – Mike
Mike,
You selecting the object you want to split out in SELECT FACES mode? Once you
lasso the faces, perform the split.

P.S. Can you upload the skeleton in it's original archived file? I'd like to
see if we can make it available to Imagine users over in the Graphics Users
Group A forum (GO GUGRPA). -Thanks
Greg,
I have the Graphics alternative CD, too. If you want I can send you the
object. I haven't looked at the CD at all so far, but now that I know there
are interesting objects I think I have to take the time.
to Michael:
I have been doing a lot of splitting, never had problems with it. The only
problem is that you have to reenter the attribs for both (or at least one)
objects.

David,
Sure…shoot the object my way. I just hope it's not the skeleton thats
floating around some of the BBS's…the skull is very simplistic.
Thanks,
GreG
Just looked through all objects on the CD and couldn't find it. Maybe I missed
it (I hope). If only I had more time.
-David
GreG,
PMJI, but it may well be " the skeleton thats been floating around ..". I
agree that the skull is simplistic (compared to Grays Anatomy etc). And I
would'nt want medical students learning from it! For my purposes, it will work
– as soon as I learn to split, I deform and rebuild in a major way.
Do you know of, for future reference, a good (medical grade!) skeletal
model or models – human and other? Viewpoint, Mira?
Thanks,
Mike
Michael,
Viewpoint has some superb medical models of skeletons and internal organs and
systems. Contact them for a free catalogue. They are pricey, but price is
relative to what you are using them for.
For a great set of human models, Crestline Software puts out The Humanoid
dataset for Imagine. It includes hierarchical models of a Woman, Man, &
StrongMan. Each figure also comes with 9 heads expressing different
emotions…anger, fear, sadness, etc. 7 heads where the mouth is shaped to
correspond with different phonems….to be used for lip-synching. 11 different
hand postures…point, shake, fist, grip, etc. Each model also comes with
several one-piece torso's in different positions…bend forward/back, twist
left/right, etc., as well as torso's for when the arms are raised up and the
shoulders and pectorals need to be adjusted.
Each model can be morphed to the other…ie: Man morphs to Man, morphs to
Strongman, or any combination.
The models do not have any hair or teeth though. <g>
Crestline can be contacted at 909-338-1786. Cost of all of the above, with a
nice bound manual is under $200. As an added bonus for registering when you
receive the dataset, you will be shipped a child model set.

Must be pretty old (or very young) models.. <G>
Andrey
GreG,
Thanks for the info – I am waiting for the Viewpoint catalog, and shall
get hold of Crestline Software. $200 sounds a decent price.
Thanks, Mike

GreG,
WHy don't you upload an example animation?<G> sounds cool.

Sam,
Got some time you can lend me? <BG>
If I did do it, I wouldn't spend any time sprucing up the default objects. I'd
do it with the default solid colored datasets. Still Interested? The anim
itself really wouldn't be of much aesthetic value though.

You send every minute on CIS and now you are compaining you don't have enough
time? <g>

It still might be interesting. (sorry for the long delay. I have to pay to be
in this forum<G>)

You ever hear of a group of pranksters called the jerky boys? That statement
just reminded me of their tape.<G>

Might be. I think I have it too. Anyone got a good humanoid figure? if not it
doesn't matter. I'll make my own<G>

David,
I shall have another go at splitting – only been playing with Imagine for
a few days, so back to the manual too! Thanks.
Mike
>> so back to the manual <<
Oh no, not that.<VBG>

GreG,
I shall upload the skeleton tonight – called skeleton.lzh. I am not sure
of its copyright status. I got it from TGA BBS, and there are no attached or
imbedded copyright statements. It was originally uploaded to TGA by Todd
Saltzman, the latest on 02/13/1992. I am checking with the TGA sysop, Adam,
about this, and will let you know. Its a pretty professional job – might have
originated with Viewpoint or Mira.
I hav'nt retried the splitting business yet, and will try again, and make
sure that I am faces mode. As a last resort, I can always slice the head off
with a plane. But I will have to use split for the arms, legs, etc.
Thanks for the help.
Mike
Michael,
Slice will work for you, just be in select faces mode. I'll look for the
model.
-GreG
Mike,
Got the skeleton. It's the one I've seen floating around that been described
as a Female skeleton. The head and feet are rather dissapointing, but the body
looks good. For distance shots it works. Thanks for uploading it.
-GreG
What is the file name on the CD? I can't find the skeleton.
-David
Aloha Michael!
Let me add my request to upload the skeleton! I've been looking for one for
some time to put into this closet I've been working on! 🙂
