Nick,
I'm very excited to see you on CIS finally. Now I can bug you even more <g>.
Actually I've been using 3D Studio more and more, but after I got the 3.1
update of Renderize a gave it another whirl. Much better! No more
finger-crossing. Ya know, there's even a few things Renderize does that 3DS
doesn't. I still love the product, even though there's been times I've felt
like pulling my hair out.
Three comments:
1. Recently, I did something to my system that has made using a 100 MB swap
file unbearable. I reinstalled Windows 3.1, and DOS 6.0 and the problem did
not go away… Symptoms are sluggish cursor movement while the disk is
churning. I've tried switching 32-bit disk access, moving the swap file to my
boot drive, and cursing. The only thing that will make it go away is changing
the size of the swap file to 50 MB. I have the PageOverCommit @ 20 and have
tested it with your recommended system files. Any ideas?
2. I've searched high and low for a good architectural modeller that will
provided adequate detailing without sacrificing flexibility. I know VS has a
modeller with the VR package, but I'm not sure if it's robust enough? I've
seen some great interior renderings on some of your brochures, any secrets on
how or who did them?
3. Did you get to go to Siggraph? I stopped by your booth and saw your celeb.
employee giving a demo, so I didn't get a chance to introduce myself… I'm a
huge B.B. fan. I hope Mr. Knight stops by the forum occasionally.

Darrin:
Sorry it's been so long since your inquiry, but I was out of town.
1. Thanks for the info on the effect of swap file size on the pointer
responsiveness. I'll look into it and see if there is a solution.
2. Visual Model is a full-featured modeler, including booleans and some other
nice tricks to create 3D objects. Its a great first modeler, and very easy to
learn so that you can turn out 3D objects quickly. However, I wouldn't
recommend it for use as an architectural modeler: it doesn't have the features
to handle very complex projects or those with a lot of different elements.
3. No I didn't make it to Siggraph, I was pulled to do another show. Such is
life.
Cheers.

Nick,
I thought maybe you'd run off, never to be heard from again. Thanks for the
response though. I have been able to use Renderize effectively with a 50 MB
swap, so I'm not in a panic… yet. Does the update make more effecient use of
memory? It's seems a little faster… and much more stable.
Thanks for the perspective on modelling apps. Maybe the dream app is not here
yet. I'll wait.
Keep in Touch,
Darrin Sabin
PS
This forum is sure taking it's time maturing. I check regularly, but no good
discussions or files. I know I don't have anything interesting to show off
yet, but I'd be interested to see how others push the Renderize limits.
Darrin:
Your right about the forum maturing. It went on-line less than a week before I
left town, so I'm scramblin' to catch up. However, look for more images and
info in the library section as things get going.

Darrin:
The best Architectural Modeling for Windows is Upfront (formerly by Alias now
back in the hands of the original developers, SketchTech).
It is an excellent 3D visualization program complete with accurate
shadowcasting and full 3D and 2D dxf import and export. I recall seeing a used
version for sale not to long ago, I can see if it is still available if you
wish.
They are due with a new release any day now (in July they promised September)
but I haven't kept in touch. Hopefully it gets here before Chicago. The new
version should catch up with the Macintosh version which has animation, texture
mapping and transparency all within the program.
I'm looking forward to more "Community" in this forum as well. I've got a
couple of things to upload. I'm just no used to CIM anymore. I've been
"hanging out" on AOL more often. I wonder how many Visual users use online
services at all.
What type of work do you do with Renderize and 3DS?
sorry if this is to long.

do you know where I can get more info on upfront?
thanks zach
Zach:
The company is SketchTech. I don't have their number but I'll put my hands on
it soon and post it here. Are you an architect/designer? If so where are you?

Darrin,
For an architectural modeler, you might want to check out CADKEY Inc.'s
DataCad. It is a DOS CAD application (they have announced a Widows version is
on the way) specifically for architecture. This is a long established program
with a lot of credibility in the architectural community. They are currently
running a promotional pricing of $150 for the professional version. If you
want more info, you could go CADKEY and sniff around their forum. I understand
that DataCads DXF output works very well with Renderize.

Darrin,
I just learned about this forum for Visual Software, and read your message to
Nick Josephs of 15-Aug. I am an architect specializing in architectural
illustration, and have been using Renderize to some extent for over a year.
Regarding your problem with the sluggish cursor during disk access of the swap
file: I have been searching in vain for a solution to this problem ever since
I enlarged my swap file from 30 Mb to 80Mb. It drives me nuts. The only thing
that I know for sure is that the magnitude of the problem is directly
proportional to the size of the swap file (I've tried a number of different
sizes from 30Mb to over 80Mb). The cursor problem manifests itself in other
software that accesses the swap file, particularly Micrografx Picture
Publisher. I have been intending to call Visual Software about the problem,
but now that this forum exists, perhaps Nick will be able to respond.
Regarding your architectural modeler question: The only modeling software that
I have used is Upfront, until recently known as Alias Upfront. Alias has
returned the distribution rights back to SketchTech, Inc. I have been very
satisfied with Upfront and I am eagerly awaiting Version 2 for Windows which
SketchTech says will be ready by the end of October. (I have Version 1.1 for
Windows) Version 2 for the Macintosh has been available for some time.
Upfront exports DXF files which import flawlessly into Renderize.
Some other notable aspects of Upfront are: Created by architects for mostly
architects; sun shadows displayed for any time/date/location in the world; the
model creating working views are always in perspective with shaded surfaces and
hidden lines removed (unless you choose otherwise); 256 named layers
manipulated in a very nice spreadsheet format; accurate dimensional input via
keyboard or on-screen rulers; import a photograph and match the model
perspective to that of the photo; 2D & 3D DXF import; export 3D DXF, WMF, TIFF,
PCX, & BMP and some other file formats; easy to use and relatively bug-free,
in my opinion. There is one problem area and that is occasional improper
sorting of some surfaces for display apparently due to conditions such as
non-planar surfaces, &/or intersecting surfaces that have not been resolved by
cutting at their intersections; the software does not provide any assistance
in finding the offending surfaces and often the surfaces that are not
displaying correctly may not be the ones causing the problem.
I originally purchased Upfront to construct perspectives to be traced over for
manual rendering; I still frequently do this. I then found that clients were
interested in some illustrations printed directly from Upfront -particularly
somewhat diagramatic overall views of complicated subjects. I then began
enhancing Upfront bitmap exports in Picture Publisher, which is very much like
doing a manual rendering utilizing the computer. I really have not used
Renderize all that much yet, but am trying to do more with it on appropriate
projects.
If you are interested in checking out Upfront, here is their contact
information:

Windows does not recommend a swap file of over 50Mb. Usually anthing over this
number actually slows products down. Try this and get back to me through this
forum.
Also what are your system specs?
I reset my swap file to 50 Mb as you suggested, and I don't seem to have any of
the sluggish mouse problem. If 50 Mb is large enough for Renderize, then I
certainly don't need it any larger for anything else that I run.
My system is 486DX/33Mz, 16Mb RAM, 2 hard drives (boot drive is "C" and the
swap file is on "D"), SmartDrive w/ 2Mb cache.
Thanks for your input.

Hello Richard:
I continue to mess with the sluggish cursor vs swap file size problem. I can't
find the corrolation you speak of when I test on my machines. Perhaps you can
tell me more about the system your working on?
In the past I have experienced a situation where _sometimes_ my cursor would
lock up for up to one minute soon after I launch Renderize Live. During that
time there is constant disk access (swap file). Eventually the cursor control
returns and the problem won't re-occur during the current session. The problem
turned out to be some sort of conflict between my COM1 (where my mouse was
located) and the bus mouse port on the back of my ATI Mach 32 card. Once I put
the mouse on the bus port everything worked fine.
I don't know if that little anecdote helps. In any case, I'll continue to
investigate the problem as you describe it. If you learn anything new, you
know where to find me!

Visual Software
Hi Nick:
First of all I want to say how pleased I am to see Visual Software's presence
on a Compuserve forum. I agree with someone else here who suggested that you
send postcards to users to let them know your here. It was through your
message on another forum that I happened to discover your forum section.
I also experience the totally locked up cursor when launching Renderize, but
that in itself is not a big deal to me – like you said it is only during launch
and then everything is OK. I don't believe this is related to swapfile size.
The sluggish cursor also is most prevelent just after launching Renderize and
after cursor control returns from the total lock-up condition. But it also
occurs periodically while using Renderize and other software. By the way, the
cursor problem does not prevent my from doing anything, it is just an annoyance
that takes up a little extra time.
I also have an ATI Mach 32 card (Graphics Ultra Pro w/ 2Mb VRAM). My mouse is
connected to COM 1. I had no idea that I could connect my mouse directly to
the ATI Card as you described; I will have to investigate this.
I have consulted several Windows books regarding the mouse problem, and they
all seem to say that IRQ conflicts cause a "jumpy" mouse cursor. I'm not sure
if "jumpy" and "sluggish" are the same thing! At any rate, I can't find any
evidence of IRQ conflicts in my system when consulting MSD or QAPlus.
Other particulars of my system are: 486DX,33Mz; 16 MB RAM; Smartdrive cache
of 2 Mb; 2 IDE hard disks (Boot drive is "C" and the swapfile is on "D"); CD
ROM (non-SCSI).
My swapfile is 80 Mb, but I have no idea if it needs to be that big. I had
thought that bigger is better, but I'm hearing from others that performance can
actually slow down if it is too big. I'm going to experiment with smaller
sizes.
Hopefully, soon we can get beyond this discussion of mundane things like
swapfiles, and onto interesting things, like Renderize.
Thanks for your response.
-Richard
Richard,
Have you run these problems by the ATI guys and gals over in Graphics Vendors A
(GO GRVENA)? They may be able to shed some light on your problem. They are in
Section 17 over there, the person you need to address your message to is Allan
Nelson 74740,667.

Richard,
See my reply to Joel considering Upfront. I'd like to see some sample work
done with Upfront. Any chance on getting one/both of you to show off some of
your project work?
I haven't tempted fate by adjusting my swapfile any larger than 50 MB. It took
too long reloading everything the first time I encountered the problem. I'm
sure you can understand how frustrating it was for me to re-install every
program and to find that it didn't fix my problem. So far running at 50 MB
hasn't caused me any problems.
