#CEI/CBM Status

Mark,
The reason that the Amiga did so well over here (the UK) is that Nintendo
wasn't available until relatively recently. By the time it was available
hundreds of thousands of A500s had already been bought so there was
already a good awareness of Amiga when the A1200 was introduced. My point
is that except for a very small minority "Amiga" here means "games
console", C=UK don't have the knowledge/intelligence/money to market the
Amiga as a serious machine and will have to compete in the console market,
which I don't think they will win. Not much hope for us serious users
there. I'll give C= about 2-3 years.
In the US it is obvious that CEI has never had a clue how to market the
Amiga in the first place and my confidence in them has not increased. If
the Amiga survives at all it will be in the US as a specialist machine for
video. As I'm not into video it's not much use to me.
Although I feel it is great system I just don't see any future for the
Amiga. Within the next couple of days I shall be ordering 2 Pentium based
machines.

Why is this obvious? You expect a distributor to advertise to the general
public?
Whoops, got my anacronyms mixed up!
I'll keep an eye on what happens with the Amiga. I'll still keep one of my
Amiga's (the 4000), for a while at least. My two systems for the office
need upgrading and I can't really wait to see if C=UK or CEI get round to
it.

PMFJI – CEI was never supposed to market the Amiga – they are one of
several US distributors supplying Amigas to dealerships. In that case,
they provided dealers with more configuration choices than CBM did,
attempting to save the dealer swap out costs.
CEI has never been a retail market player. It would be like asking The Wiz
to create a product image for Sony or Panasonic. CEI's marketing plans are
laid out in the Oct'94 AC interview with Alex.
Hank/Videology – Where you get all the P.O.M.P. under all
Circumstances
On your view of the UK.. we agree.
On CEI I say – It wasn't there respnsibility to market the machine in the
United States.
