Tab, >> Dell is selling … 128-bit video … Think about this. PCI buss is currently 32 bits, expandable to 64. The human eye has trouble distinguishing individual colors at 24 bits. So, just WHAT in that Dell machine is 128 bits? Tony T. The guy with the 64-bit Jaguar

The 128 bit graphics that Dell is referring to has nothing to do with pixel size or the PCI data bus. What's 128 bits wide is the data path between the graphics processor and graphics ram. Yes, the CPU talks to the graphics processor over the less wide PCI bus, but like on the Amiga, the CPU ain't doing the drawing, the graphics processor is and the fact that it can squirt out 128 bits at a time makes it *very* fast. Another reason the ol' Amiga ain't what she used to be in the world of computers.

Tony, I used to sell stereos. You know how you sell stereos? "It has 100 watts per channel and the speakers are THIS BIG!" You know how you sell computers? "It has a Pentium processor and the hard drive is THIS BIG!" In other words, real need is irrelevant. The average consumer has a real fear of buying something for a lot of money that is obsolete when the tape on the box is cut. Dell is selling to that crowd. Right on, Tab! From time to time, I sit at an "Advice Table" at a local computer show. My sign says "Amiga", but the questions are almost always: "I want a computer that won't be obsolete in a few years". Hah! "I don't know what I want to do with it, but I know I want Windows". "I have to get MultiMedia because I don't have a CD player yet". Hard to believe. But it's pointless trying to reason with them. Most have a "list" given them by a friend who already has an MS-DOS machine. The list is always that friend's wish-list. So here come these people who have never had a computer, will not know what to do with one, and they want a Pentium system with an 800MB hard disk and all the trimmings. I want to shout: Buy a used 386 (the stores are glutted with trade ins), avoid Windows, and find out what's going on in the world! But I'd be wasting my breath. And there's no way I could say, "Have you considered an Amiga?" –Jim
