PMFFBI I have no time to read all the **** replies to David's question BUT
all you need is to read the Adaptec EZ-SCSI manual, which came with your
SCSI-soundblaster.
The ASP 16 SCSI-2 host adapter belongs to the AHA-1510/1520/1522 product
line. IOW you can use the ASPI2DOS.SYS software command "h". Default is
/h7 (host adapter ID 7).

I did in fact read the manual, my concern comes from the statements
on pages D-19 and D-20 of the Adaptec EZ-SCSI manual where using the /h
option with the ASPI.SYS command is discussed. This option is listed as a
group 1 option and on the same page the statement is made "group 1 options
should never be used in systems with AHA 1520/1522 host adapters." The
SoundBlaster's SCSI port is an AHA 1522 adapter, I am not sure what they
are warning will happen if you use this option I am simply concerned that
there is a warning against doing this.

The SoundBlaster 16/SCSI-2 uses the 6360 adapter, not the 1522. The DOS
driver is ASPI2DOS.sys

The Adaptec SCSI manual says in the preface "AHA 1510/1520/1522 – Non
bus master host adapters for PCs with an AT (ISA) bus. Creative Labs Sound
Blaster 16 SCSI-2 also resides in this category." Further down the same
page "AIC 6260/6360 – SCSI protocol chips. Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16
SCSI-2 uses the AIC-6360 controller chip."
On my sytem when I run the SCSI bus ID program Adaptec provides it
indicates that the controller is an AHA 1520, this is in the group of
controllers that the manual warns against using the /h option to reset the
host ID ( /h is identified as a group 1 option and the manual says never
use group 1 options with AHA 1520/1522 controllers – page D-19.
The information provided seems to conflict, I have no idea if doing this
in fact will cause any real problems, I simply noted that there is a
warning from the Adaptec people against doing this. Some folks have said
they have done it anyway and it seems to work, others have reported errors
when they tried this so I guess anyone with a need to try proceeds at
their own risk. Thanks for all the responses.

When I run SCSIFMT it tells me I have the AHA-1510/AIC-6360 on the
SoundBlaster 16/SCSI2 board, so the group one options apply. I hav since
put the /H6 switch in config.sys, and the host adapter is showing up as
unit 6.
You want to add some more confusion to this? Go read what the glossary
says about the AHA-1510/1520/1522 and the AIC-6260/6360.
The former are a family of host adapters designed for use on the ISA bus.
The later are SCSI protocol chips which provides an interace between the
ISA bus and SCSI bus.
You know what that sounds like to me? To me, it means I don't have both
the AHA-1510 and the AIC-6360, just the AIC-6360 (as manual states is used
on the SoundBlaster 16). Both chips are doing the same basic job – SCSI
to ISA bus.

Thanks for the info – glad its working ok for you, I changed over to
Corel SCSI software a while back so I am getting a different reading on
the host adapter type from what you are seeing. MSDOS is so much fun !

The world pays with ingratitude.
The German manual version page D-20 allowes the /h option with these
adapters too (translation error?). BTW why you don't even mentioned this
option before towards the nice guy, who was asking you? If anybody wants
to know more about the Soundblaster series SCSI II host adapter, plz use
CIS "Go Blaster".
I myself use a CD-ROM drive from the PC side as well from the Amiga one in
this way without any problems.

concerns raised by the conflicting statements in the Adaptec E-SCSI manual
