OK, Rick, I have downloaded both the weather map AND the viewer program to my
hard drive. I still get the same error message 121 "file is not an object
module." How do I "integrate" the downloaded file and the viewer program?
What I need are step-by-step "handholding" instructions. None of my manuals
have a hint of how to do this. Does it make a difference what I name the
downloaded file in the file requester? Does it have to have the format
XXXXXX.YYY or something similar? I downloaded the ViewTek file, which is named
VTEK21.LHA/bin. Is the "/bin" part of the file name, or is that merely
additional info for people who know what they're doing, which I obviously
don't? I have the A-Talk3 software. Does this already have GIF capabilities?
The instructions for the weather maps said that if this is the case, to type
DISPLAY (menu number) at the prompt. I tried this, and the machine "thought"
for a few minutes, and then said "map not available, try later" or something to
that effect. I'm not sure whether the map REALLY was not available, or whether
it was just a glitch. I'm guessing the latter, but am not sure. Any more light
you could shed on all this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Steve.
Yes, the "/bin" part just indicates what type of file it is. In this case,
it's a binary file. In this case it's an archive created with the program
LHA. Archived programs are compressed to make them smaller for the library
and so you'll be able to download the file quickly.
Download the program LHA138.RUN from AmigaUser, and run it by typing
"LHA138.RUN". That file is a self extracting archive containing the program
LHA.
By typing:
LHA -m -x x VTEK21.LHA
You can extract the files in the VTEK21.LHA archive.
There should be instructions in that archive for the ViewTek program.
You'll have to type something like:
viewtek picture.gif
to view the picture.gif file.
I don't know what the /bin is, you can get rid of that by renaming it. You
must have the LHA archive program, it is available in the AmigaUser forum
library 14 named LHA138.RUN. Download this, go to the shell (or, if you
have 2.0+, double click on it) and type "run lha138.run". This is a self
disolving program (it will dearchive itself). After that, Move the "LHA"
program to your C directory (There are other ways to do this, but for now
just move it to this directory). Now go to the shell and cd to the
directory where you have VTEK21.LHA. Double click or type "lha x
vtek21.lha", hit return, and the program will unarchive into several
programs. From here you can use WorkBench to doubleclick on ViewTek's icon.
This will bring up a standard requester (you may want to read any readme
files that came with ViewTek first. There may be some libraries you need to
copy first). Use the requester to find your GIF map, doubleclick on ot and
up pops the picture. There is no integration involved.
I don't think A-Talk3 has GIF support, but AutoPilot does. It is worth
every penny it takes to get this program.
I hope I was detailed enough to get you started. I was assuming you had a
least a little basic knowledge of using AmigaDOS.

AutoPilot has 'Gif' support?
uhh.. I know what AutoPilot is and I know what Gifs are.. but
what is GIF support.. is there a graphics mode on this terminal that
I'm missing?

Michael, try this some time:
Go online interactive and GO Weather, download a satalite picture for your
area. As the map downloads, it will be displayed on the screen. When it is
finished, it will ask if you want to save this picture and request a
filename. This is what I meant by GIF support (I believe you might have
been listening to my reply to someone who wanted to view weather maps, which
are GIF pictures). Hope I didn't confuse anyone. I haven't tried to
download any other GIF's besides weather maps, has anyone else been able to
use this feature with other GIF's?
