Lynn– For some reason, I was getting a Requestor telling me my printer was not online. If I clicked on RETRY, I would get two more lines printed, and the Requestor would appear again. This would go on until the end of the document. This was with the Star PowerType printer. Customer Service could not duplicate the problem. Then I changed the driver in preferences to the correct on (EPSON) and the problem went away. However, this was a month or more ago, and there may well have been some other cause. I do recall that it was a thought about the driver on my workbench disk that led to the solution and I believe it was changing the driver that fixed the problem. Sorry I cannot be more exact. (Sometimes I wish I had JOURNAL running all the time.) // Jim

Jim – Had the same experience with the newest release of WP and the printer driver. I know they say that they don't use the preferences driver, but if I don't have the proper driver selected in preferences, WP says that it cannot open the printer device. I also discovered this by accident after the customer support people at WP were unable to help. The WP program must be using _some_ information from preferences driver if it makes this mh difference, no? @ Anne

Anne– I don't know why it happens. My guess is that since the article I vaguely recall said that even programs that don't use Preferences can be affected by it, it may not be that WP is specifically tied to the device driver but that it is happening at some "lower" level. BTW–customer support went so far as to hook up a Star PowerType that someone there happened to have to try to reproduce my problem. They could not, of course, and it could be we would never have solved it because the Preferences setting is not an intuitive place to look. Same thing happened recently with Superbase Personal. I printed some mailing labels for the Boston Scottish Fiddle Club (I'm a member) three across, and the zip of some of the members didn't print. Since SB has a miserable user-interface for setting up mailing labels, I might have spend hours fiddling with that if the director of the club hadn't said in pointing out the problem. "You must have your right margin set too short or something." The Okidata ML 92 has no command for right margin setting, but sure enough I had my Preferences at 75. I changed it to 80 and everything worked fine. Naturally, if you set a margin in the software you do not expect Preferences to over-ride it, but it does happen and there is nothing in the docs to say set it in Preferences. Oh well. It works fine once you know. // Jim

Jim – Interesting to hear that about Superbase. I don't use that program, so didn't know about that quirk. On the other hand, VIP Professional _does_ allow me to override my Preferences settings as far as margins, spacing and pitch goes. In fact, that was the only way I could get my old Star SG-10 to print in Elite mode. Certainly nothing in the documentation would give many clues as to why this should be, and I'm not a programmer, so don't pretend to understand it. I'm just glad to works sometimes at least. @ Anne
