#500/2000 PORT PROBLEM

I helped develop a hardwire cable and program to link the Commmodore 64 and the Amiga 1000. My problem is that the serial port on the 500/2000 is slightly different than on the A1000. The pins that are used on the A1000 are 2-9 and 14. I know that pins 2-8 are the same but I need to know how pins 9, 14 are different and how I can change the cable to work on the 500/ 2000. I don't get a chance to call often so if you have any suggestions, please send them via Easyplex. THANKS Lawrence Niebauer (74017,450)

Lawrence, My suggestion would be to use 3 wires only, on pins 2, 3, and 7. Regards, Larry.

THANKS FOR YOUR SUGGESTION BUT I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND YOUR MESSAGE TO WELL PLEASE EXPLAIN IN SOME DETAIL WHAT YOU MEAN. ALSO THE PROGRAM I HAVE WORKS TERRIFIC ON THE 1000. COULD I GET THE SAME RESPONSE WITH ONLY THE THREE WIRES (WOULD IT WORK AND WHICH PINS ON THE C-64 WOULD I USE??) THANKS LARRY

Larry, The three wires are all that are needed, assuming that you have an RS232 adapter for the 64. (I made that assumption because you were talking about a cable with more wires). Connect the three wires as follows: Amiga pin 7 to 64 pin 7 Amiga pin 2 to 64 pin 3 Amiga pin 3 to 64 pin 2 Do not try this unless you have an RS232 adapte on the 64. Regards, Larry.

larry, ON MY CABLE I GO FROM THE RS232 PORT ON THE A100 TO THE COMMODORE 64 USERS PORT IT HAS 24 PINS I DID IT THIS WAY BECAUSE IT IS VERY HARD TO FIND A CHEAP RS232 PORT FOR THE C-64 THANKS LARRY

Larry, This will not work. You stand a chance of frying something at worst, and of not having it work at best. The reason there are RS232 adapters available for the 64 is because the 64 has only a user port operating at a voltage range between 0 and +5V. The adapter is to convert the signals to RS232 levels, which range between +12V and -12V. Putting -12 onto an output pin of the user port is not healthy for the silicon on eiether end of the wire.
