#TOASTER and VID Equip
14 messages in this thread
Hello all we are currently evaluating Video equipment for use with the
toaster for ourselves as well as resale to our customers We are looking at
the Prime Image TBC Model 25 (its less then $2,000!) Sony CCD-V5000 Hi-8
camcorder SONY EVO-9700 Hi-8 dual deck with build in TBC SONY U-Matic
VO-9800 3/4 inch deck Hitachi VLS-9700 S-VHS with TBC Would appreciate
hearing from anyone with experience with these units especially the video
professionals out there! Thanks Much! Regards, Daniel Sternklar ,Clear Star

Daniel, I use the Sony VO-5800 and VO-5850 quite a bit — I think the
VO-9800 (and 9850?) are newer versions with a few more bells & whistles.
The VO series is probably considered high-end industrial but can be used in
broadcast as well. What're you and your customers looking to do with the
equipment? There's a pro-sumer TBC due out for about $1500 soon, I think.

Tom,
The 5800/50 is the standard 3/4" edit system; the 9800/50 is the 3/4-SP
system. Somewhat higher resolution, better S/N and they fixed the most
prominent 3/4" artifact, something known in the trade as "ringing."
Ringing shows up in an image with a lot of detail as a series of ghost
images trailing off to the right of the primary image.
The VO-XXXX is indeed the industrial side of the Sony line.

Tom, We are getting more involved in video post production ourselves. Our
client base is wide anywhere from hobbyist to professional. There are lots
of low cost tbc's on the way . In the meantime we are stuck with whats out
there. The amiga just might help drive the prices down. In the meantime
stuck with buying prime image model 50's in the 2K range. -ds
If you're getting heavy into professional post, you'll probably want to
at least take a look at the Sony BVU series. They're gorgeous machines,
although the price would incline you to make sure they can pay for
themselves. 😉
=Tom=
Tom, The BVU units were suggested to us recently . Are they capable of
single frame recording? Do you also know much about single frame
controllers like the BCD5000 we may become dealers for them. -dan
Daniel, check with Mike Berro (76004,2001) about single-frame
controllers; he's written software to drive 'em. As for the BVU series
decks recording single frames, sure — they use SMPTE time code which
guarantees you'll find the correct frame. The VO series will do single
frames, but they count control track pulses to locate themselves and they
can slip a bit; they're only accurate to about 2-3 frames. Not good at all
for what you'll be doing.
=Tom=
Tom,
Not true! The VO- series machines can CERTAINLY do time code! The older
machines (like the 5850) can put it on an audio channel; the newer machines
in the 9800 series (the 3/4-SP machines) can also put it on an address
track, I believe. Plus there's also VITC (vertical interval TC) which I
believe they can also use.
Mike's stuff can talk to all of them. Even the 5850.
Pete
Excuse me for jumping into this thread . . . but Sony does NOT recomend the
VO series for single frame recording. The mechanical guts were not designed
for the stress. IF you can afford it, stick with the BVU series if you
are going to do much single-frame recording. -Chris
Chris , thx Panasonic has a worm laser now for about 12K that records
24,000 frames its getting interesting They are also releasing a new S deck
with TBC called the 7750 could this work? -ds
Voops! You're right — I remember that there was a retrofit package for
the 5850 that set it up for time code. I dunno about having it in the
vertical interval — I think it used the address track. But anyway, I don't
know any specifics about the SP machines.
=Tom=
Pete;
Even the 5850 can be modified to use address track code by adding the
alpha audio mod. VITC can be carried by any deck since it is on a line in
the vertical interval of video, however, special readers are required to
seperate the lines and decode the SMPTE info, not cheap!
Keith (Grace & Wild Studios)
Tom, cant the VO series use SMPTE with an add on module? Would the new
Panasonic 7750 be a good choice for single frame work? thx ds
You're right about the addon module for the VO units, Daniel. Pete just
reminded me about it! I don't know beans about the Panasonic, though;
sorry.
