I think I recall seeing a message from you saying you had a VIP video
encoder. If this is true, have you tried transfers to S-VHS tape and how
was the quality of the output? If I got the wrong person please disregard
the message. Thanks.
No, I haven't tried the S-video yet. However, I can assure you that the
VIP's standard output is very good.
Also, on your VCR, check that the Tracking isn't too far off and that the
recording heads are clean.

Thanks for the reply on the VIP encoder. I have checked my encoder
output on three VHS VCRs and one S-VHS, and get similar results in all
cases. Since I am feeding the input to the VCR's from the composite plug
and comparing the results from the Amiga with two other composite sources
(the antenna feed and a camera) I assume the results must be unique to the
Amiga. Also, I get decent output from the B&W composite output of the
Amiga.
The problem, to my untrained eye, is that the colors seem too saturated.
I would very much like to know if you have run any comparisons using the
composite output to a standard VHS compared to the S-VHS output to an S-VHS
tape ? If you ever do such a comparison I'm sure many folks on this forum
(or at least me) would want to know the results. (Hint,Hint,Hint).
By the way, my CMI encoder definitely works better with the video
monitor RGB plug disconnected (it says so in the manual and I've confirmed
it to be true). Does the VIP enoder say anything to imply you should
disconnect the RGB cable prior to "best effort" transfer to video ??
As suprising as it may seem, my CMI encoder produces best results when
transfered to normal VHS tape. The colors still look a little too
saturated. When I go to S-VHS tape the colors are WAY TOO saturated.
Several innocent viewers have been forced to watch the same Amigavision
script playing on S-VHS, VHS, playing with the RGB cable connected and
without, playing from the A2000 composite B&W output and from the CMI color
composite output. All of them seem in agreement on the poor quality of the
color output and on the relative ranking of the results.
Please let me know if you have any ideas on what improvements I could
make before I go to buy a new gadget. I'd love any input. Thanks.

I have noticed color problems even with the VIP, and I can only say that
it takes careful color choices to get good results with NTSC due to it's
limitations. Also, lots of dithering and anti-aliasing seems to help on
NTSC output as opposed to large areas of a single color. The type of RCA
cable you use can be important.. Make sure you specifically have a video
cable. I do not notice any difference when the RGB pass-thru is
disconnected, nor do I remember any mention of it in the VIP literature.
Lastly, when I playback my animations from VHS, I find the picture on a
TV/monitor to be much superior to what I get from my 1084 composite
('color-noise' is greatly exaggerated); I only use the 1084 for a vague
reference while recording, not for final scrutiny.
