I'm looking to buy a new 9600 baud modem. I'm not sure what one to
b though. Price is a major concern so obviously I'm going to buy a third
party modem. I want it to have v.32/v.42 and mnp 2-5, that's the latest I
think. The ZOOM, ATI, and Cardinal are all in the low to mid $300. Which
is the best, or if you know of a cheaper modem in the same range, help
would be appreciated.

Actually, V.32bis/V.42bis are the latest. Also, you'll want to be careful
about the phrase "9600 baud" — is the 9600 raw speed, or speed after
compression? There are a lot of 2400 baud modems out there that provide
"9600" by using compression; on the other hand, there are true 9600 baud
modems that offer even higher throughput with compression. Considering
that you said the modems you're looking at are "all in the low to mid
$300," I'd guess you'd be getting a 2400 baud modem that gives you 9600
baud througput with compression. Better make sure that's good enough for
you.

And if you really want to get nit-pickey….so called "2400 baud"
modems are only 600 baud modems with 4 bits per baud giving a 2400 bps data
rate.

And I use an older 9600 baud v.32 modem that doesn't support error
correction, seems like there aren't many of these around any more. The only
problem that I have with this modem (beside occasional line noise) is that
many BBS' assume that you've got an error free connection just because
you're using a v.32 9600bps modem.

Yes…I'm serious. 'baud' has a strict definition, although just
about anyone who isn't a communications engineer doesn't follow the
definition.
Baud is the number of discrete signaling events per second, also
known as state changes per second. Early on in communications, each state
change represented a single bit thus X baud also represented X bps (bits
per second).
However, methods have been developed to modulate the signaling
signal so that each state change of the signal represents 2, 4 or more bits
of data. Thus the bps rate is the number of bits per baud times the true
baud rate. For 2400 bps modems…it's 4 bits per baud and the true baud
rate is 600 baud.
I *believe* 9600 bps modems 8 bits per baud with a true baud rate
of 1200.
From what I've read, there is a theoretical baud limit in every voice
telephone line of about 2400 baud, due to the fact that the typical voice
line has a useable bandwidth of 300HZ to 3.3KHZ (about 2400HZ).
Which, considering the quality of the average phone line between home
and the CO, it's amazing that any modulation can occur! And already
there's talk of dial-up 19.2K!
I believe that v.32 9600 bps is 2400 baud (4 bits/baud). I'll look it up.

It's refreshing to see somebody that knows what the terms really mean! Am I
correct that a Bell212A modem (or that standard if you like) is only 300
baud/1200bps? A long time ago (well, about 12 years ago) I helped a friend
who was customizing the MODEM program (for CP/M) to handle Bell202C modems
(1200 baud OR bps half duplex). This was back in the time when a high speed
modem (1200bps) was a rarity, and very expensive (if you could even buy
one), and we had a pair that we paid $800.00 for (212A's that is). We were
doing the work for half duplex, as there were many 202's available at flea
markets in the $10.00-$20.00 range. I believe that the 202's are still used
by ham operators, as they're about the only modems that have only one
carrier tone, only on when sending, quiet when recieving. It's truly
amazing the advances that have been made over the last few years, now I
have a 9600bps modem that is starting to be considered slow (it can't go
higher than 9600!), back 12 years ago, 300 was the norm, and my 'letter
quality printer' was a Teletype ASR33 running at the blazing speed of 110
baud! What little programming I still remember (not much) was learned in a
HS computer science class that used a PDP11/70 with TTYs as terminals, and
PAPER TAPE as the storage media (for students at least). I remember taking
those tapes home, and loading them into my NorthStar thru the TTY I had at
home, talk about a program taking a long time to load!

On the 212a, I'm almost positive that it's 600 baud dibit
quadrature phase shift keying. In fact, looking at the specs of an old
modem it shows it's 1200 bps mode as "Quaternary Differential Phase Shift
Keyed". That would imply 4 phase shift "positions" possible ( a binary
00, 01, 10, or 11) or dibit transmission.

The first computer I ever used was the university mainframe – an Elliott
803B. It was the fully expanded version – 8192 words of memory at 39 bits
(plus parity) each. The Algol compiler and run-time code took up about 75%
of this, and longer programs had to be compiled out onto paper tape. I had
the luxury of having two high speed paper tape readers, capable of almost
330 charcters per second (5 bits per character), but running at such a high
speed, the readers were prone to making errors, and I remember I had to
slug the code somewhat to drop the speed to a still fast 300 chars/sec.
The output devices were a pair of high-speed paper tape punches, which
zipped long at 100 characters per second. The output tape then had to be
wound up and carried next door to a spare Creed teleprinters (there were
three in all, for maximum throughput), where the output was printed at a
tolerably fast 10 chars/sec.
The computer was controlled via a keyboard, about the size of a desk, at
which instructions could be entered in machine code. Of course, as with
all the best computers, there was also a loudspeaker. The speaker was
pulsed every time a jump or floating point math instruction was executed
(yes, it even had a math co-processor!), and with a bit of cunning, you
could write a program to play a tune.
The processor was perhaps a little slow by modern standards – 576
microseconds for most instructions (excluding floating point math), but
only 288 microseconds for a jump instruction. Yes, microseconds, not the
new-fangled nanoseconds, but bearing in mind that it was a serial processor
(i.e. it carried out its instructions on a bit-by-bit basis, not
byte-by-byte), this was quite understandable.

It's certainly not in the $300 range, but the US Robotics Courier Dual
Standard is what is found in CompuServe comm centers. With it you can
connect at true 9600bps with V.42bis (compression).
As others have mentioned, beware of the new 2400bps modems that have
V.42bis if you plan on dialing CompuServe. Some of these modems fake you
into thinking you've connected at 9600bps by saying "CONNECT 9600". In
reality 9600 is only your potential max with the V.42bis compression. If
you try to dial a CompuServe 9600bps number with one of these modems you'll
get dropped. On the other hand, CompuServe does not support V.42bis at
speeds below V.32 9600bps.

I have an ad here in front of me from EggHead Software, listing the
Practical Peripherial 9600SA (standalone) modem for $499.99. Say it offers
v.32, v.42bis, MNP/5 protocols.
If I'm looking for an Amiga/CIS compatible modem, is this a good one? (boy
all these protocols are confusing!)

Just a side note: they also advertise a Zoom 2400 Exernal modem with
Send/Receive Fax for $99.99. Man those IBMers get all the price breaks!

I've been using a Practical Peripherals 9600SA modem for a while now. It
works well with CIS. I've had no problems with it at all.

I've been using the Practical Peripherals 9600SA since December or January.
I think it's a great modem – gives me real good service. In addition to
that, they have a forum right here on CIS to support it (GO PPIFORUM).
Practical is a division of the Hayes company, I believe.

John, The most frequently used 9600 baud modem on CIS is the PM9600SA.
It's an excellent modem (it's what I use), has a 5 year warranty, excellect
quality control (Practical Peripherals is owned by Hayes), and has great
support via Practical Peripherals forum here on CompuServe (GO PPIFORUM).

I would bet the Practical Peripherals modem is a good one.
Here's how I see the standards:
V.24 2400bps
V.32 9600bps straight
V.42 9600bps with error detection/correction
V.42bis any?bps with compression
(there's also a V.32bis out there that is something else!) Anyway, these
V.xx standards are defined by the CCITT (a body of folks which create
datacomm standards), whereas the MNP levels were created by a different
group (stands for Microcom Networking Protocol I think). From what I've
read and heard, MNP 4 is error correction, MNP 5 is data compression, but
in the 2: 12:1 range. V.42bis can approach 4:1 depending on the kind of
file (ASCII compresses better than binary).
Apparently in the public arena, the CCITT standards are starting to gain
more acceptance than the MNP. But you still get them all with the better
modems you buy.
Tim, you've got the standards close but not *quite* right, if memory
serves…
v.22 1200 bps
v.22bis 2400 bps
v.42 — not related to speed, LAP-M error correction
v.42bis — not related to speed, data compression
v.32 9600 bps
v.32bis 14400bps
(all of the above speeds are full-duplex)
Some others (*not standards*) of note:
HST 14400bps(half-duplex),300?bps back channel
PEP 18000bps(half-duplex),1200bps back channel
One other thing to remember is that MNP-5 is “stupid'', meaning it will
attempt to compress the data stream even when it is *expanding* it! (a
common occurance with archived files) V.42bis is “smart'' in that if it
sees that the data stream is expanding it turns the data compression off.
Also, I believe that v.42/v.42bis include MNP-4,5 as fall-back standards.
I've heard of a new standard in the works, (called v.fast?), that is
supposed to be 19200bps.
I once read an amusing comment about v.32/v.32bis modems… a fellow said
"These modems have more computing power than most of the computers they're
connected to", which is probably true in our case if you're using an
un-accelerated Amiga.
The nice thing is that v.32 modems are on their way to becoming a commodity
like v.22bis modems are now… Prices are dropping very rapidly, soon we'll
probably see v.32 for under $300 on a regular basis.

I've seen Zoom's V.32/42 & V.32bis (upto 12.4Kbps) for $399 in Nov.
Computer Shopper. It got good marks in a moden-roundup review in the same
issue. Another one they recommended that I found for $379 was the ATI.

Chris, thanks for the product advice. The main question I have (I guess)
is about the protocols used…. are there others (than V.32/42 and V.32bis)
that are likely to become the 'standard'? Or are these the 'standard'?
I'd hate to spring $400+ on a 9600 modem and find out that I chose the
wrong one later. If that's a strong possibility, then I'd rather wait till
things sort out. Any advice?

John: If you buy a modem with V.32, V.32bis, and MNP 1-5, you should be
current for some time. V.32 is the current standard for 9600 with V.32bis
the up and coming standard for I believe 14,400. BTW, if you can wait
until the first part of January for your modem purchase, then take a look
at Supra's soon to be released modems. 9600, V.32, send/receive fax
external – street price around $229. 14,400, V.32bis, send/receive fax
external – street price around $329. Fax software will probably add a few
bucks. I know that Winfax for Windows is $40 and Bitfax is $20, so Amiga
software shouldn't be too much. I'm going to buy the 14,400 V.32bis as
soon as available. I've had the Supra 2400 for years and never had an
ounce of trouble. I like their tech support as well for the few times that
I've called them. You can call Supra toll free. Their number is either
1-800-72-SUPRA or 1-800-27-SUPRA. I can't remember which.

I don't want to get into 'standards' wars, but you SHOULD know that CIS
is using V42.bis NOT V32
Vic:
I think you've got that backwards. CIS uses V.32 format at 9600 bps. V.42
bis refers to the data compression method that they do not use because they
claim it does not have any benefit for all the compressed files here.
In my opinion their pricing structure is the reason they don't support
compression. They'd want to charge more for higher throughput. I've read
that V.42bis is smart enough to know if it's hindering a transfer, and it
turns itself off. MNP-5 compression can make a compressed file transfer
slower.

Ok, I stand corrected. BTW, although CIS _may_ claim they don't use… the
compression, my modem tells me that I'm running a compression (and the
lights on the modem tell me that also) when I'm connected. I'll try to
remember to 'snap' what the modem says as I connect the next time I'm at
the office
Vic, I think both you aren Paul and confused. V.32 is a data transmission
protocol and v.42bis is a compression protocol. CompuServe supports both
(kinda — at this time CompuServe supports v.42bis between you and your
node, but not yet from CompuServe to the node).

the terminology. It's a 'secret language' that I'm not real comfortable
with yet.
Paul, Both you and Vic are incorrect. At 9600, CIS supports V.32 and
V.42bis. CIS does not support MNP-5 because of the compression problem you
state — most users aren't knowledgable enough to realize that for binary
transfers they'd be costing themselves more money by using it.

supports all the protocol standars v.32, v.42, v.42bis etc. It is in th

The cheapest 9600 bps modem I've seem so far is the Okidata. It has V.32,
V.42bis, and MNP 2-5.
It's advertised in the Dec. Computer Shopper on page 863 by a company
called Tredex 5306 Beethoven Ave, LA, CA 90066 800-338-0939. They show a
price of $300, but it's crossed out with 'even less!' printed in.
The Damark catalog also has it listed for $270 + $8.50 shipping.

I haven't got one of these yet, but it seems to be the cheapest around for
an external. Of course, that will probably change next month.
