All – what is the preferred method for creating a rendered architectural walk-through? Rendering with Autoshade and using Animator Pro, or DXFing the whole thing into 3D Studio and doing it there? What are the pros and cons of each method? Would the end products look different (assuming using a high res mode in AAPro), and if so, how? Any advice or info gladly received!! Dave

Dave, My preference is 3D Studio – much easier to work on the motion, lights, etc. and greater flexibility for textures. If you'd like to discuss over the phone, you can reach me at the office @ 310/820-4004 (M-F 9-5). Any discussion here would likely have to be somewhat terse. BTW, motion for a simple walkthrough of a 3-bedroom house can be designed in about 5 minutes, once the model makes it into 3D Studio. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Dave: I'd agree with Keven…3DS is a much easier environment for animation. Of course, budget constraints can be another matter (only if this is a "casual" endeavor). You could create a crude shaded animation with AutoCAD alone, using AutoFlix 2.0 to create a series of shaded AutoCAD slides, played back in a script. For anything more serious (read: professional), get 3D Studio. Regards, Jeff Hester

Jeff – thanks. That's the way it's looking to me too. I have your book, by the way; I started it a few months ago and then got really busy, but I should get back to it and delve a little deeper… Dave

Dave: Have you been using 3D Studio? I started a model yesterday that will eventually be rendered and animated in 3DS. The model's being built in AutoCAD R11, however. That's where my roots are, and what I feel most comfortable with (at least under my current schedule). This should be pretty cool…an aircraft hanger with sliding doors that are over 1/2 an acre in size (seriously, the doors!). I'll also have a good excuse for putting a plane or two in there. Jamie would appreciate that. I'll let you know how it goes. Jeff Hester

Jeff – no, I don't have it yet, but I'm close <g>. I'm also going to have to get a new box to run it in, so that's another consideration. Your model sounds pretty nifty. I have a future airplane project of my own — a Beech Staggerwing — but it's not going to be my first project! Dave
