#Screen Artist's CD

Phil, –thought I move our conversation to the open forum since I just saw
your CD today… watched it with my dealer and a game company wig… We
were all blown away! Alot of people have been doing really cool stuff and
it's great that you took the time to collect and press it. BTW… Martin
Foster's Rodney King animation is a classic… everyone wanted to see that
one again. Oh yeah, my dealer wants to know if he can get a copy of the CD
for display at computer shows. Thanks for the CD, Phil… way to go!
–Frank
Thanks for the kind words! If you think that is hot, wait until you see
Volume 1! The Gold disk (a WORM-like test press) should be here tommorrow.
The enhancements are as follows:
1. 45 min SoundBlaster soundtrack to the main FLI loop. Thats 45 min on
a 64k cached continuous read drive, BTW) When the user types SBGO, Creative
Technology's MMPLAY is launched into a very long sequence. All of the music
was composed by Nico Boese and sequenced/authored by Peter White. They work
at CPS Computer Distribution, the exclusive German distributors of the
SoundBlaster. I didn't believe how good the quality of the sound was till
I heard it. In addition there are about a dozen shareware type
SoundBlaster demos. Most of these are hard coded Amiga MOD ports to the
sound blaster that drive all 4 tracks with real time osciliscopes.
2. Macintosh support in the form of:
a. FLI100 – the first Mac FLI player. It works but there are definately
some minor problems with the palette processing. It doesn't stream but
loads the entire file into memory. On a 5MB MacII with System 7.0 a 1.02MB
FLI was the largest that we could load assuming that there were no other
tasks.
b. Director animation and 24 TIFF files courtesy of ARTEC, the London
based Art and Technology Centre.
c. Complete ISO9660 compliance… You will get icons if you throw it in
a MAC! [cont]
[Continued]
3. Real CD quality audio originally authored by Nico Boese. There is only
room for 10 min of this at the end as we have totally filled the CD. The
dataset alone is 598MB not including the Mac stuff.
4. Many more demos! Animotion Graphics, Enlighten and Jetu have each
contributed large amounts of excellent Grasp demos. The Animotion stuff
will be particularly interesting to 3D Studio users as he uses extensive 3D
graphics that he generates on another system.
5. The art on the top of the CD looks great unlike the first issue. We
are also including a booklet that explains the CD and lists all of the
contributors.
Now the best news…. Creative Technology and the other Sound Blaster
distributors so far have ordered over 5000 copies to give away as a promo
pieces. If all goes well, they should have them by early January.
If anyone in the USA wants copies they should email Ernie(Nimbus)
70632,3011. I know that he had 50 last month and probably still has a few
left. He should get the new plates in a couple of weeks and then will be
able to press the Volume 1 in Virginia.
Phil,–The Gold Disk sounds cool… the Sound Blaster stuff ought to make
that CD killer. Looking forward to seeing the new animations and listening
to that Nico Boese cat. Real happy that Creative found your CD, shall we
say, interesting <g>. I really like the SBP… mine sounds great. I did
try to use MMPLAY with a 640 x 400 FLI but it did'nt work. What player are
you using for your high res. flics? And oh yeah… I really liked that
Sound Blaster animation <big grin>… –Frank
I am glad more people "enjoyed" or (I hope) were provoked into some
political thinking. So far that has been my most talked about animation.
Maybe there's a sequel in that somewhere… (I have done a prequel which is
a police helicopter and police car chasing a civilian car).
I am sure a lot of serious thought went into making an animation of a real
life outrageous event. I would like to see the helicopter and car chase…
I don't recall seeing a 3D recreation of one. I like Phil's disc… gives
you a chance to see what other people are doing.
This next press is actually Volume 1 of the Collection. The term Gold Disk
means a test pressing. I don't want there to be any confusion because I
think that there is a CD product available called Gold Disk. Really glad
you have an SBPro. MMPLAY won't play FLI files larger than 320×200 yet.
The trilobyte player is on the CD but there is no script for the SVGA
stuff. The FRANK_?.FLI files are in the main GO.BAT loop on Volume 1. I
sure wish we hadn't rendered that sequence with DITHER-256=ON. There is
just too much delta….
In an earlier message I said that Mac pictures were 24 TIFF and they are
actually in 24 PICT.
–Phil, Got it: next press = Volume I. I'll have to try out the Trilobyte
player. It's rough choosing between 640×480 or 320×200 w/sound. If you
ever do a Volume II, let me know… got some hot off the press stuff you
might like<g>. Later on. –Frank
