PDraw Windows to Amiga?!

Well, It finally happened! One of my customers wants to send me a file from
ProDraw for Windows… Naturally I have ProDraw for the Amiga! Due to some
major ignorance on Gold Disk's part the files are COMPLETELY INCOMPATABLE.
They call their program "Professional" Draw for some reason that I cannot
fathom. Fortunately I also have that WONDERFUL program PageStream… A page
layout program that can import more drawing formats than Gold Disk's
DRAWING PROGRAM. Sheesh! I wish Gold Disk would GET WITH IT! and make their
two drawing programs COMPATABLE.

Both Professional Page 3.0 and Professional Draw 3.0 for the AMIGA were
released before Professional Draw Windows. Although the release dates were
close, it would have been impossible to create the import ability without
PDW being finalized.
Since that time, neither PPage or PDraw have been upgraded with any new
features and a great deal of concentration was to other projects such as
Office 2.0 and PageSetter 3.
Professional Page 4.0, due out at the end of the year, will include the
ability to import both Freehand and Illustrator files and be able to
hotlink the file to PDraw for editing.
We chose to use the Illustrator import (available as export in PDW) as it
is one of the more popular formats.
Eventually, this import ability will be added directly to PDraw as well.

Great! I just got the upgrade notice and was pleased to see the new Import
capabilities. Glad to see ProDraw will be getting similar features. It has
been a Looooong wait. Next I'd like to see similar EXPORT capabilities! It
would be nice to draw on the Amiga and be able to send editable files to
all those millions of "other" computers out there. It could open up a lot
of business to us Amiga owners.

With Art Expression you could convert your clips into IFF DR2D (for the
Amiga) and then into Adobe Illustrator (for other computers).
For Art Expression owners: we're working on a 1.01 release which will
improve preferences printing. It will be mailed free of charge to all
registered owners of Art Expression 1.0, automatically.

PPage itself is more of an integration package. You bring in other elements
for final 'paste-up'. Are you aware of any other DTP pagelayout programs
that allow you to export…say Pagemaker to Quark…other then EPS?
You are more likely to see a version of Professional Draw on the Amgia be
able to export as some other structure drawing formats.
I can see creating something in Illustrator, take it 'home' to the Amiga
for editing, and then back to Illustrator later on.
I can't really see taking Quark to PPage to PageMaker…not in the near
future anyway.

The ability to transfer a file between several DTP programs would be
really good. While you say you can't really see taking a PPage doc to
Pagemaker, I can see where it would come in handy. I can see where having
some form of universal transfer format that would possibly be agreed upon
by all the major DTP programmers would be REAL handy, for example, I had a
project I was working on with a friend, he swears by PageStream,
(personally I swear AT it, but that's another story), and he wanted me to
help him finish it up (of course I use PPage), so it was harder for me to
work with him as I had to use PageStream, and I don't know PgS half as
well as I know PP, then once we were finished with it we took it to be
printed on a linotronic, and of course they use PCs & Macs with PageMaker,
so we had to bring them a PS file, and of course once printed it needed
minor changes, but we couldn't do them! If we were able to bring the file
in some universal format we could have made our changes in a couple of
minutes, and reprinted, but instead we had to wait another day, as we had
to go home, do the changes, resave the PS file, and by then they were of
course closed!

I agree totally about the usefulness of being able to import other document
formats. My partner uses PageMaker on his Mac. I use Ppage. We often do
long docs with me doing the first half; him, the second. It would be great
if I could just send him an editable file so he could make the corrections
he needs sometimes, instead of having to tell me, get my proofs, check it,
revise, etc.
An Amiga program that could make file compatible docs for PageMaker or
Quark would not only be useful, it would boost the Amiga itself.
Of course, it may not PAY the company for the time it takes to develop the
module.
Still, if Art Department can make it, why not a universal file editor?
