#FREE RENDERING addendum

Thanks for your reply!!
I'm in Hawaii, but I plan on paying the Federal Express charges. Project file
xfer will be by modem, or disk. Output would be a choice of Beta SP, HI-8, or
SVHS. I based .60pf on a 4 meg project file. This file had 180,000 faces, 1
reflection map, 2 shadow maps. The price is for the entire process, rendering
and taping. If there are other services that you would like to see, please let
me know. Titling? Soundtrack dubbing? Video Post? As for the extra
charges, probably .10pf per extra ref/shdw map, or IPAS procedure. Nothing is
finalized yet. I figured .60 for 2500 frames and up, .70pf below 2500 frames.
Thanks again for your reply!

PS you are #15, and filed.
I forgot to ask– How much would you anticipate using this service? (Once a
month, twice etc) I'm trying to get a feel for the industry. Kinda' isolated
out here on the rock. <g>
Thanks,

Hi John,
Obviously, the distance from Montreal to Hawaii has to be taken into account
but one way you might consider receiving the file is thru Compuserve E-Mail. It
is an especially good way to do it when the client is using 3D Studio R3 and
Archives the project.. so everything is there.. the materials, etc.. and then a
zipped file is sent thrue-mail to you.. Obviously for returning to client using
a courier like Federal Express sounds good.. Will be curious to find out what
those charges would be like for a package containing a video tape..
Interesting way of figuring the fee: >>I based .60pf on a 4 meg project file.

the entire process, rendering and taping.<<

Titling? Just to let you know that some local places do not charge extra to
including simple intro and extro titling..
Soundtrack dubbing? Same with including an already recorded soundtrack… But
on that point it's always negotiated for a small fee.. If the recording
facility is good..
Video Post? havent used it yet so cannot comment on how much extra.

E-mail me for a reply and I'll send you more comments on your charges…Costs
less to use e-mail than constantly going back into this forum… (I'm sure my
time on this forum is paying for someones holiday to Europe<g>
John, just so you dont feel to bad about being on the rock… we just got snow
last night and today its overcast and 38 F..but I got the winter tires on.. OH
yes… how many times I'd use it.. Up to date I've done it myself about four
times in the past 6 months.. So in the new year.. who knows..sorry

The problem with CIS E-mailing large files is that it is ridiculously
expensive. A one meg file is like $30.00 or something. A good 50% of my
meshes are more than one meg, not including image files. I've got 20 megs of
image files in one animation. I could personally fly it to Hawaii for less
than CIS charges.
I think something should be done about the way CIS charges for transfer of
larger files. Their rates are designed for text type E-mail, but so many
people want to exchange files, too, and files grow larger and larger every year
(not just 3DS).

I thought J. Wilson was going to provide the transfer service "FREE" as part of
the "FREE rendering" when he charges the $ .60 per frame to lay to tape.???
With his 800# idea it could be done at around .20-.25 per minute. My 800#
costs me that much. Did I miss something in this thread while I had all my
machines rendering over the weekend?
You didn't miss anything. E-mail is just another possible method.

I was replying to a message that said CIS E-mail would be a good way to
transfer files. While I agree on small ones, the big ones which I would
consider servicing out are ususally bigger than 1.5 megs and have massive
amounts of texture maps to go along with it. I tried E-mailing a mesh to Adesk
once, and was going to be charged $30. I hopped in the car and drove it over
instead. Cost me a buck or two in gas, and 3 bucks bridge toll. On a 40meg
project (with tga's) I could fly to Hawaii for cheaper than CIS E-mail. I
agree with you, a #800 BBS would be the perfect way.
John Tissavary (La Luna cie)
Well that problem of transfering files can easily be solved by putting a
dedicated BBS system of our own, and have someone with experience and time
manage it. That way, the only cost involved would be the long distance one.

>>dedicated BBS system of our own, and have someone with experience…
Alex, if there is enough interest, I may put up my BBS system again. I
participated in FidoNet for about a year. The system required minimal
maintenance, but started to get a bit costly.
I maintained a separate phone number at $20+ per month. I dedicated a 286 with
only a 2400 Baud modem and too little hard drive space. I imagine file storage
for a 3DS BBS would need to exceed 600 Megs as a minimum!
There are certainly some benefits to running a "free" BBS, so I'm going to look
into starting up again. Let me know your thoughts on this.
David,
We have a free 3DS BBS system which is connected to FidoNet. Anyone is
welcome to use, plenty of space available.

Excellent! I'll give it a ring.

basic CIS cost included a certain quantity of free E-mail..
After that I thought it was rather cheap// Probably because I'm not using
e-mail for files is why I think it's cheap// but mailing it thru postal service
sounds better and lower in price..
