Have just received my copy of T-Rexx. Have loaded on to my computer – which is an Amiga 2000, with the Toaster 4000 hardware/software. On booting up – get the following message over the WB Screen "The ARexx server (RexxMast) is not running. Please start the ARexx server before running Pop-TR". What's gone wrong – and how do I correct it??? I am a simple sould – so please lead me on a simple step by step path to get things right. If you need further info'…. let me know. Regards….. Hilary.

Try running RexxMast 🙂 In your system directory. –Paul < Motorola Inside >

Thanks for the suggestion Paul. I took the Icon out of the Systems window and plonked it into the WBStartup one. This seems to have solved that problem as far as I can see. Next problem is trying to see the windows produced by T-Rexx. The actual program window is so jittery with interline problems, that I feel as if I was looking at crude animation. Is there any way out of this problem – other than buying a "Flicker Fixer" – which would make my purchase of the ASDG T-Rexx – a rather expensive proposition? Again thanks & best regards, Hilary.

Hilary, one thing you can try is to change the color palette the program is using, if it will allow you to. Since I lost my kept messages in a crash, and can't recall the better choices, I'm sure someone else could provide some examples. Ask over in AutoPilot, if nothing else, since some people still use AP on a non-flickerfixed machine. Brian bjbart@watserv.ucr.edu

The flicker does not come from T-REXX. You have a problem somewhere else. What is your system configuration? –Paul < Motorola Inside >
#70526From: Hilary SzymanowskiDec 17, 1993 11:07 AM
Paul. Configuration of my Amiga 2000 is as follows:- GVP 28 MHz accelerator. 9 Megs of RAM. Workbench 2.04. 204 Meg Hard disk (SCSI). Toaster 4000 with software. It is ONLY on the screns of T-Rexx where the line flicker is very apparent. In video is is know as "interline flicker". Due to the two field pix delivery to the CRT. The density of boxes – small type – narrow lines etc. in T-Rexx contribute to the problem I think. It is very annoying to look at for very long. Regards, HILARY

Hilary, I think you can simply drag the RexxMast (?) icon into the WBStartup drawer… Someone correct me if I'm wrong, Jerry
#70397From: Hilary SzymanowskiDec 15, 1993 12:04 PM
Thanks Jerry…. I did just what you suggested…. and all is well! All the best, Hilary

I have no suggestions as to how to correct it …. but I have the same problem too. TRexx is looking for RexxMast, which according to my calculations should be running, since it is in my WB startup directory. Apparently you can adjust the priority of those programs, which I tried doing, to no avail. So I end up double-clicking the RexxMast icon before I run TRexx. It's no end embarrasing for an aspiring ARexx guru. Barbara

Mixing a flicker fixer with the Toaster can be trouble. A cheap and reasonable effective solution is one of those smoked plastic screens to lay over your monitor. By decreasing contrast a little, those screens cut flicker a lot.

I've been using a Flicker Free Video board for years on my Toaster with never a problem. Am I missing something? –Paul < Motorola Inside >

Not that I'm aware of, although there were some reported cases of bizzare problems with the FFV-2, the Toaster, and GVP accelerators all together. I have heard in some cases with this combination, the FFV2 would fail. Chris Edgin ASDG tech.

Frustrating Barbara! Moving the little Icon out of the Systems window – into the WB-Startup seemed to do the trick for me. Probably there is some way you could start the thing with a line in the S: directory "user-startup" file. Am sure that some expert can advise on this. Interesting….. To-date have NOT had and help/advice from the makers of this program. Regards, Hilary.
#70592From: Brian BartlettDec 18, 1993 4:59 AM
Hilary, if you put it back in your system directory, add the following line to your s:user-startup file: Sys:System/RexxMast >NIL: The >NIL: shoves the normal output from the program ("Start RexxMast" or somesuch) to the bit-bucket, never to be seen again. The same principle applies to other programs, perhaps PopTR, which I believe is a subject of discussion further down the line. You may also need to add a <NIL: in there if the program you add to your s:user-startup does not allow the startup CLI window to go away. I hope this helps. Brian bjbart@watserv.ucr.edu

Thanks Brian for the suggestion. Will give it a try soon. Have a good Xmas…. Hilary.

Brian. Inserted your suggested line in my "user-startup" file. Regret to no avail, the dratted little window still appears on booting up WB. When you "CANCEL" the thing goes away and, on opening the SYSTEM window and clicking on T-Rexx icon, it informs you that it is already running. Am surprised that the ASDG folk do not seem to have a fix for this problem. If they do, they are certainly very quiet about it! Thanks anyway….. Hilary

Hilary, looking at this message and the one you posted down the road to ASDG, I'm a bit confused as to what you have done. Did you move RexxMast back to your System drawer? If so, did you add the line Sys:System RexxMast >NIL: to your user-startup? If so, that should take care of the immediate problem with programs balking about RexxMast not running, as no program gets a chance to run from the WBStartUp drawer until well after User-Startup is done. If T-Rexx is complaining that RexxMast is not running and T-Rexx is in the WBStartUp drawer, something very odd is going on. If the problem is that a program is complaining that T-Rexx is not running, that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Then you would look at adding a line, after the one that starts RexxMast, to start T-Rexx in your User-Startup. Either that, or look at modifying your commodity priorities, but I seem to recall that didn't work for this situation. Am I even close to what is going on now? Brian bjbart@watserv.ucr.edu
#70741From: ASDGDec 20, 1993 8:41 AM
Make sure Rexxmast is put back in the system drawer or you will keep getting those annoying 'has not returned yet' or run 'rexxmast' requestors popping up. What is happening is that the Pop_TR commodity is trying to run before ARexx is active (Pop_TR requires ARexx). Unfortunately, adusting the delay tooltype for Pop_TR only results in 'has not returned' messages. As it was stated in earlier messages, running rexxmast from the user-startup is the only way around, just make sure you put rexxmast back in the system drawer and add this line to S:user-startup; run >nil: sys:system/rexxmast should do the trick. Chris Edgin ASDG tech.

Chris, I think you misdirected that. It should have gone to Hilary. I'm happy to see that our advice is essentially the same. Brian bjbart@watserv.ucr.edu

I should not have been so smug is saying that it was fixed. For some reason or other – I once again get the signboard on starting up. Did you ever have any other suggestions that worked Barbara? Hilary.
#70580From: Barbara AndrewDec 17, 1993 11:41 PM
I did actually talk to ASDG tech support about this some time ago. They suggested I change the priority of the commodities that start RexxMast and PopTR. I believe it is all covered by using CX_PRIORITY in conjuction with the PopTR command (check out pages 148-150 in the manual, it tells you how to change the priority of commodities). It's some time since I fiddled with it, so I'm hazy, but the default priority of commodities is 0. What I think you need to do is make sure RexxMast runs before PopTR does (because PopTR looks for ARexx and gets plaintive when it can't find it.) While it all sounded fine in theory, I was never successful in getting this to work. I tried different priorities, but to no avail and finally I tired of it all. I'm ashamed to say that what I do now is: open WBStartup; double-click on PopTR, then run TRexx. Not elegant, but it works. Perhaps this will point you in the right direction. I'm hopefully getting my Toaster4000 next week and I plan on spending some time on this sort of housekeeping, so I'll probably grapple with it all then. Let me know how you get on. Barbara
#70617From: Hilary SzymanowskiDec 18, 1993 3:52 PM
Thanks for the info' Barbara. Will take a look at the pages you suggest in the T-Rexx manual….. and then see what I can fiddle with. In my case the PopTR Icon is nicely tucked inside the WBStarup can of worms. It does not appear on the first boot-up window. So….. you are splurging on the Toaster 4000. I got mine around 3 months ago. It is an improvement over the Ver:2.0. Effects go far more smoothly – and they have improved on the CG – although I use "Montage" (Innovision) for the majority of my titles. I still have Ye Olde Amiga 2000….. and will have until my clients decide to pay billings more promptly. Money goes OUT faster and more than it comes IN. All the best, HILARY

I'll let you know if I come up with any solutions during my setup of the new Toaster. I'm very much looking forward to getting it — one of the main reasons for upgrading was the improved CG. I got an Amiga 4000 this summer as I was able to justify the expense as part of a large print job I've been doing. Then, once I had it, it seemed to make sense to upgrade the Toaster …. It just goes on and on doesn't it? But I still have two trusty A2000s. Wouldn't dream of getting rid of them. Wish you luck with your fiddling. Barbara.

I get the same problem with my system. I've got a 2000 w/Toaster 3.0 and just received the T-Rexx Pro. I'll try to drag the ICON over to WBstartup but there MUST be a way to alter the Startup_Sequence script file. Hopefully simple since I am not yet Amiga DOS literate (Everything I know about IBM and DOS is WRONG!…and hard to re-kearn)>
#70683From: Barbara AndrewDec 19, 1993 10:03 AM
Good luck in figuring it out. I'll let you know if I come up with anything. Barbara

Greg, I don't have T-Rexx just yet, Santa may deliver…, but I may be able to help. What do you want the startup-sequence to do with your installed T-Rexx? Burning the Midnight Toast Patrick White
#70742From: ASDGDec 20, 1993 8:46 AM
Only modify the user-startup NOT startup-sequence. Since WB2.04, the startup-sequence file has become somewhat off-limits. Modifying the startup-sequence could cause the system not to boot up properly (some modifications interfere with the IPrefs and you could get all sorts of annoying requestors). See my previous post for info on how to modify the user-startup for use with T-rexx. Chris Edgin ASDG tech.
#70699From: Hilary SzymanowskiDec 19, 1993 1:41 PM
Brian Bartlett suggested adding a line tothe "user-startup" which was supposed to start T-Rexx on boot up. Tried it…. with regret it does not seem to work. Have printed out the stuff you sent after your ASDG call. Will mess about and see if I can make anything work. Just why folk like ASDG cannot give us a simple fix to the problem, I just do not know…. Perhaps now that they have our bucks, it is "good luck and goodbye!" Hilary.
#70743From: ASDGDec 20, 1993 8:47 AM
Put rexxmast back in the system drawer and add this line to the user-startup: run >nil: sys:system/rexxmast If rexxmast is left in the wbstartup drawer this operation will not work. Chris Edgin ASDG tech.
#70868From: Kelly JordanDec 22, 1993 6:48 AM
Chris, RexxMast doen't need to be 'RUN'. Just: Sys:System/RexxMast >nil: will do. 73, Kelly

Thanks for the info'. Wish you folk had put a little bit about these things in the Manual. Us simple folk need to know these things to get the best out of the Program. All the best….. Hilary.
