Virtual Reality

Hello, I have designed and written a virtual reality type of game which can be played over a network (modem based). After spending much time tweaking a 3d engine for flat shaded polygons to get somewhere around 15-20 frames per second rendering 300-400 polys, I hear about this animal called the Cyberspace Developers Kit (CDK). Can I get answers to questions about the CDK here? I have spent no less than $100.00 in long distance charges simply looking for someone who can answer development level questions about the package. Thanks for you help. Curt

Hi Curt, You can ask questions here. I'm the one who tries to track down answers to CDK questions. However, other users of the CDK also join in. Jonas[adesk]

Jonas, Great great great! I think these are fairly simple and straight-forward questions. Does CDK require a math-coprocessor to run the sofware written with it? My low end target of the software is a 386DX-25 with a plain-jane SVGA card with at least a VESA driver for it, and 4 megs of RAM. I know it doesn't currently have texture-mapping, and have heard that it will in the next version, but can you give me ANY information as to when the next version will be shipped? I have been talking with Sense8 about the WorldToolKit and they are *very* agressive about their Windows based kit. I can't wait too long, theirs is here now, and they claim it runs at a higher frame rate under Windows than the CDK does under DOS. I don't want to write this software under Windows, but I will to get this product to market. I really like the object oriented approach to the CDK. Is it written in assembly with the methods really wrapped in a C++ wrapper? This would mean it is very fast (assuming there aren't alot of virtual functions). Speed is the name of the Game. I saw, in your notes, that there is a distributed networking protocol of sorts included as a separate class hierarchy, as well as a serial class hierarchy. Can these be used together to create a serial based distribution of a simulation? <I know that last one wasn't simple, but I would like to know> And finally, the Watcom C/C++ 32 compiler claims to be AutoDesk compatible, yet the info on CDK only mentions Zortech and MetaWare High C/C++. Can the CDK be used with Watcom C/C++ 32? Thank you for answering these questions for me. Your answers will determine whether I purchase your software or not as well as give me some insight into what AutoDesk considers a Virtual Reality solution. Curt

Curt, Yes, you can post questions about the Autodesk Cyberspace Developers Kit here. Anything we might not have an immediate answer to we can forward to someone who does. -Brian
