One of my (former) ACOGS associates is looking for public-domain or low-cost software to model the conditions necessary to implant rock bolts or other rockwall stabilization devices. There's a commercial package called RockPack (sp?) that does this but it's not in his budget this year and since he's paid with my tax dollars I'd just as soon track down something cheaper for him <GGG>. He calls what he wants to do modelling "Wedge Failure Analysis". Does anybody have any ideas about where we could track down software that does this? Any ideas on other forums where I should look? TIA! Yours in freedom, -=< Angus Scott-Fleming >=- GeoApplications Tucson, Arizona

Angus, The area of specialization that wedge failure and rock bolts fall under is called rock mechanics. I've had alot of education in the area, but have never seen a program that will do wedge failure calculations. My advice would be to contact a University that has a mining engineering department and ask to speak to their proffesor who deals in rock mechanics. They should be able to help guid your friend to any software. Schools that have mining programs are, Michigan Technological University, University of Kentucky, University of Missouri Rolla, Penn State, West Virginia, University of Arizona, Montana Tech, Colorado School of Mines, New Mexico Tech and University of Nevada. There are some others but I can't think of them off hand right now. Steven Brooks

A more specific university contact. Afshin Sadri Dept. of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering McGill University, Montreal CANADA Rock Mechanics Lab: (514) 398-4393 If he can't answer he'll direct you to the proper specialist. Mention me to smoothen the contact; he's a good friend. Bruce
