#MAPS-PATH Config

In configuring 3DS4 in the 3DS.Set to have access to the Maps on my CD-ROM I
remove the semicolons and change to my drive (J). When I try to open 3DS I get
the message "CAUTION: Drive J not present – using current drive"
I'm obviously missing something along the way but I don't know what. Can
someone out there help? Thanks

On some machines, some individuals have a bat file that looks like….
echo off
dir j:
3ds
echo on

Thanks for your reply. I have just returned from a short trip to find your
reply. I created a 3ds.BAT file in my 3ds4 directory but that does not solve
my problem, I still get "Path J: does not exist. Using default".
Should I install your suggested 3ds.bat file in a different directory?

It's my understanding that you modified the lines in your 3ds.set file so the
MAP-PATHs point to your CD-ROM.
;MAP-PATH = "z:\WOODS"

Then change the line to..

when you do a F10 and get the Dos prompt, does dir j:\maps\woods work?

Let me recap this for you.
1. When I edited the 3ds.set file by removing the ";" which precedes the
MAP-PATH="z:\xxxxxx" and replaced the z with my CD-ROM drive (J:\), save my
changes, type 3ds to start my 3ds program I would get the message "Path
J:\xxxxx does not exist, using default" for each MAP-PATH so treated.
2. At your suggestion I created a 3ds.BAT file in my 3ds4 directory. That
had no effect and the J:\ drive was still not recognized.
3. When I do a F10 then dir J:\maps\xxxxx I get the appropriate scroll of
the requested directory.
4. When I am in the Materials editor I can create a path to any of the Map
files, but I assume that if I have my 3ds.set file properly set up that access
to these Maps is more direct.
Sorry for all the hassle but this is all a new experience for me and I am at a
loss to sort it out without some guidance.

'Scuse me for jumping in here, but let me see if I can muddy the waters a bit.
<g> It might help to explain the reasoning behind the problem, and why Jonas
suggested the batch file.
On some systems, 3DS can't see the CDROM drive as a map path if you haven't
already accessed that path, from DOS, _before_ starting 3DS. To test and see if
this is the case, leave your 3ds.set MAP-PATH parameter set to your CDROM drive
J:\, as you originally had it. Now, reboot your computer so everything is
starting from the beginning. Next, from DOS, type:
dir j:
You should see the files in your CDROM. (If not, you've got a problem with your
CDROM. If yes, proceed…)
(Oh, by the way, delete that 3ds.bat file in your 3ds4 directory. Since it's
got the same prefix as the 3ds executable, it's only confusing things.)
Assuming you've deleted the 3ds.bat file and displayed your J directory, go
into your 3ds4 directory and start up 3DS. If your CDROM map path now works,
you can proceed to the next step. If it doesn't, I'm lost and someone else is
going to have to step in.
If 3DS now works, you can create a batch file just like Jonas mentioned, but
I'd place it in some other directory than your 3ds4 directory. I usually keep
all my .bat files in a directory called BATS on drive C:, and then include it
in the PATH list in my Autoexec.bat file. I also usually give it a slightly
different name than the 3ds.exe file. (Typically, 3d.bat). Now, to run 3DS,
just type 3D from anywhere.
