#Non-linear affordable?

Thanks John,
What do you see as the most important new advances in technology
affecting DTV? DSP, 128 Bit Video, Faster Hard Discs, New CODECs,
MPEG specs, New Types of Vid Memory? If there is somewhere I can go
to read the latest info on the bleeding edge technology I would like
to know where that is. Anything you can tell me would be greatly
appreciated.
Also: I am ignorant of the performance value of specific non-linear
systems and mags such as DTV Mag tend to be short on evaluation and
long on specification. I mean how much value does a statement like,
"Full Motion, Full Frame, 30fps" have anymore. I want to know what
the *picture* looks like. Is it better or worse than VHS tape? Do
you know of a good mag where I can keep up to date? Or other places
on CServe or the Inet I should look to.
I want to be ready to go digital as soon as it makes sense
financially. If I can set up a machine for $10,000 (all pieces
included) it will roughly be the same as my analog stuff (without the
Amiga) and that would make sense…if the quality is the same.

In the DTV world when it comes to judging the quality of non-linear
systems, I would say that you need to look for "horizontal
resolution". The higher resolution the higher the video output
quality. Some computers today are achieving horizontal resolutions
of over 1400 pixels. Translated to video terms this means that you
have a <35ns "rise time", producing very sharp video.Most
professional, on-line, non-linear systems today are peaking out at
about 750 pixels of horizontal resolution.
