#Baud Bandit Modem Help!

After getting the phone company to clean up my line (yes, they actually did it…), and after talking my job into buying a 2400 baud modem for the MicroVAX, I gleefully went to buy a new Progressive Peripherals Baud Bandit w/ MNP5. It's a nice modem, with good documentation. I have no trouble with it getting to CompuServe, to local BBS's, or to a number at Encore Corp. However, I just can't access the MicroVAX!!! I can access the MV with other 1200 and 2400 baud modems (w/o MNP5, though), and my friends can reach the MV with my modem from their homes, but !I! can't use MY modem from MY house 😐 . I've tried all sorts of modem settings, including turning off the error correction ("at/n0"). If I dial the MV at 1200 baud it connects, but the characters are all way up in the ASCII set (as if parity were wrong, or something). If I dial at 2400 baud the Baud Bandit won't even get a carrier detect, even though I can hear the "squeel and squawk" over the speaker!! Frustration. The Pro. Peripherals folks don't have a clue; they are going to try dialing the MicroVAX themselves, with one of their modems. In the meantime, has anyone got an idea??? Mucho obliged. John

John, Sounds as if bit size and/or parity are wrong. Go to one of your friend's homes (where you can connect with the VAX) and try it. Then look at the his/her setup parameters (bits, stops and parity). Then go back home and make sure your setup is the same. Don

Hi, Don. The settings are 8N1, and always have been. I can get the VAX with any of three other modems at 8N1… I even have two different s/w packages to use; Online! v2.01 and the Meshugena VT220 emulator. I've been calling the VAX for two years with other modems (sigh!). Oh, well, either there is a wierdness in my setup of phone lines that only affects this one modem calling just one place, or I'm doing something incredibly stupid. I won't place any bets.
