Have you been tying the wrapper leaves together to blanch the heads? If
they're tied too tightly it can sometimes lead to rot.
No i haven't. And now that I have read your message, I am not goig too
either. The Japanese do this with the Chinese cabbage. I am not sure what
it does. It may have to do something with the humidity, since the winters
are usually (although not this year) very dry. Thanks for the pointer,
though.
Tying the cauliflower wrapper leaves blanches the head and keeps it nice
and white. If the leaves aren't tied to tightly, and if the weather isn't
too hot and humid, rot shouldn't be a problem. There are also some
"self-wrapping" varieties such as AVALANCHE and ALERT. These varieties
have upright wrapper leaves that shade the head and prevent it from
browning.
Thanks for the advice, Warren. Living in Japan, I am not sure which variety
I've got, as names and types differ. Mine do, however, self wrap. I've seen
a number of places here where commercial growers grow caulis, and they
never wrap them. For these two reasons I doubt that this is the reason for
the problem. I shall, however, keep your advice in mind. Reuben
