I'm a senior CS student hoping to write two papers on AmigaDOS… Can anyone point me toward info? I'm interested in general overviews of the OS, and also more detailed info such as memory management, deadlock management, file and I/O systems, and the object-oriented aspect of AmigaDOS. Thanks for any help or suggestions! – Jonathan

Jonathan, I would suggest that you look at some of the technical magazines for the Amiga. Currently, there are AMIGAWORLD TECH JOURNAL and AMAZING COMPUTING TECH JOURNAL. Some time ago, there were two others: AMIGA APPRENTICE AND JOURNEYMAN and TRANSACTOR. Of course, all of these things are explained in the Rom Kernal Manuals which you can buy at most bookstores (they are not cheap!). The best overview I read was one that came out very early – about 1986 – called THE KICKSTART GUIDE TO THE AMIGA, published by Ariadne in England. Betty

Betty, thank you for the suggestions! If (_when_, I'm sure) I run into questions on the OS, they be posted in section 8? – Jonathan

We'll do our best to answer any questions. If you get them in the wrong section, we can move them to the right one, though it is a bit easier if you put them there in the first place. Would you do one more thing for us, please? We use a full name policy here in the message base, so we'd appareciate it if you would stop at the forum! prompt, type OPT (or options), select name, and type your full first and last name there. Thanks. Betty

Oops, sorry about the name. Too much moving between small BBS's and CIS! – Jonathan

Sir: Needless to say, I (and I suspect many others) would be interested in the very overview you describe — when my Win3 friends ask me to describe the Amiga programming environment, I have no easy answer -not the first-chapter introduction for people who are about to make a career out of it, nor the broad-brush light-weight overview for users, but a sensible, sophisticated discussion of the relative pros and cons of the OS design…. Keep us posted!

There was also an article in Byte sometime last year that gave information I think you would find most useful. I really can't remember much about it but it was written by one or more 'Amiga Notables'. Carl Sassenrath(?) comes to mind. – via Whap!
