I wonder if Alec will point out that he used CompuServe to gather information about software for thus purpose.. The forums (Both ARETAIL where he first started asking questions (before I referred him here), and ASOFT where he was able to speak with the developers of the program) played a large part in his information gathering process, and I would also assume in gaining any assistance he needed in using the program.

I'm sure he will. He'll also give credit to the brand of jeans he was wearing when he created the animation, the type of coffee he was drinking while waiting to see whether the court would accept the animation, and the type of graphic display card he used to render the animation. <g> – Jack (Gee, nobody mentioned Animator Pro, which was used to title and play the animation.)

Jack, You've got some great ideas. Coffee, jeans, VGA card: I hadn't thought of those angles. Start making some phone calls and I'll give you 10% Let's not forget I was using an INTEL cpu and I think I drank some Pepsi's ! <g> I must tell you that in spite of the fact that many people kept telling me that I must have Animator to go along with 3DS, I didn't get it until very late in the project. I never understood what the heck it was or what it would do and I had my hands full learing 3DS. I wish I'd had it sooner; it is a fantastic program. If someone had described AA as a "post-production house" for fli's (which is how I regard it), I would have got it right away. BTW, I used AA not AA Pro. I'd like to mention to all that I'm not an artist or an animator; I'm a ballistics guy who needed to get a job done and I used 3DS as a tool to get that job done in a better way than I could have without it. I really enjoyed using 3DS. Many times I found myself astounded at what 3DS would let me create: "What man hath wrought!" as someone said. If 3DS is the beginning, imagine what we'll have down the road. I had no idea that my case would have resulted in such publicity. I did not know that it would set legal precedent and become so controversial. I've had many people discuss new 3DS projects with me since and I do think that all you real artists and animators will get some business because what is coming out of all this news stuff is an awakening to the value of 3D animation as a communications tool. (Seems to me that there is a bigger 3D market out there than flying logos and hummingbirds) However, I must inform all of you that my lawyers, agents, and representatives are seeking patent and copyright protection for all 3D animations used in criminal trials. Only those who have been licensed by us to utilize 3D animation in criminal trials will be permitted to do so. It's under the propietary "Look and Feel" doctrine. (Well, OK. I'm just <g>ing) Thanks Mr. G, Laurie Steele, and the others who made kind remarks. Alec Jason

Congrats Alec! I just spoke to Computer Graphics World, and they are interested in letting me do a story on you. What I need are some slides and or a copy of your tape if you have one available. If not, maybe you can get me some .TGA files and I'll have the slides made. Either way, give me a call so we can work out the details. Thanks! Hi Scottv, Yes, you were the one who referred me to ASOFT when I first began looking into 3D animation. I started with the Generic Forum becuase I had never heard of 3DS — only Generic 3D. You really did help me by educating me about 3DS. I believe you were the only person on any forum who was actually willing to TALK ON THE TELEPHONE !!! A rare event. Thanks again. Alec Jason

Hey, I'm just glad (he says doing the "aww shucks pebble-kicking shuffle") that I could be of assistance. I'm also proud that it all worked out, that you folks won you case, and that we get a bunch of free press out of it… And believe it or not, more of the former items than the latter. I assume the word of mouth in your little community is going to be phenominal. Scott (can we call you Quincy?) v
