Any suggestions on things I should do to make sure the modem is set
up properly. I am using all factory settings at this time, and it seems to
respond to AT S- inputs properly.
At one point when I was screwing aroud trying to figure the problem out I
had the thing (I guess) set to "forced connect" cause as soon as it was
finished dialing it would connect (to nothing, of course).
If it seems I'm not completely sure what I'm doing, <g>…

My first guess on your problem would be the modem itself might be
defective. A simple test would be to set it to factory defaults completely.
Next, try to dial yourself…the modem should dial and then report BUSY.
Next, try to dial another modem…CompuServe would be ok. You
don't have to log on…simply try to connect with one of the modems. Make
sure you're calling the 1200 baud number, not the 2400 or 9600 baud
numbers.
If that works, then it's simply a matter of setting your modem and
software to properly match each other. You'd need a manual for the modem
and the instructions from your terminal program.

As it turns out, I can substitute another identical modem and give
that s shot. If it works (the substitute), then I guess I will have
narrowed it down.
