#3D Studio and NT
14 messages in this thread
Does 3D Studio Release 3 run in a dos box under Win NT? Is any tuning
required to make it work? If I take advantgae of Win NT's built in
networking, will 3D Studio be able to take advantage of it? Is a
version of 3D Studio coming out for Windows or Windows NT? Can you
give me detailed product information?
1) 3DSr3 does not run under Windows NT. The Phar Lap dos extender
inside of it does "real breaks" that NT doesn't support.
2) Autodesk doesn't comment about future product development plans
for 3DS.
You told me that 3DSr3 does not run in Windows NT. However, as quoted
from the file 3Ds3.rls file in File Library 9,:
>Network Rendering
>The new network rendering function is Netbios-independent, meaning it will run
>on any PC-based local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN), including
>the new Windows NT(R) from Microsoft.
Can you explain?
I didn't write the 3ds3.rls file, so I can't comment on it (and have
no idea why it says that).
Because you can use _any_ network environment, including a NT server –
"As a file server". That doesn't mean you can run 3D Studio in the
server. The same is true for folks running a PC/NFS network out of
Sun's, SGI's whatever…
But a WinNT server still means that the clients must be running 3DS in
DOS windows under Windows for Workgroups or WinNT, right, and we know
how fun that can be? Or is there a way for a DOS machine to access a
WinNT server that I've forgotten? Are you thinking of something that
requires more add-on software?
No. You don't have to run Windows in order to use a NT server. When
you install Windows for Workgroups you also get a DOS client
software. You can do anything you want without ever loading Windows
(wouldn't I know that!?)…
By the way, the DOS client software (NET.EXE) is available in the
Microsoft forum. It is an interesting (read FREE) Lantastic
alternative. Just note that the SERVER must be running either W4W or
NT, thus, not a total Lantastic (or Novell Lite) replacement.
I looked at NET.EXE again last night. It eats a lot of low memory, and even
doing a few simple tests, it hung on me. Maybe it loads high, I didn't try
that. But with a few machines here at the office, it might be an acceptable
way for me to try network rendering.
Do you have W4W 3.11? The NET.EXE included with it is pretty decent and not
that big. In fact, it's comparable to Lantastic (both smaller than Novell). At
any rate, I call it a cheap alternative at best. The point is, anybody who has
W4W has a peer to peer network ready to go and they may not even know it.
No, I think I'm still at regular 3.1. I've heard 3.11 is an improvement. I
haven't bothered to find out how to upgrade. I'm getting tired of sending Bill
Gates more money. I wish he'd start sending me money for a while.
As a developer, you should get a hold of the Microsoft Developer Network. There
are all kinds of levels going from around 500 bucks to over $10k a year. I get
6 to 10 CD's every other month with everything you can think off from
Microsoft. Every API, every document, every tool, every system OS in every
language known to man, so much stuff I don't even know what else is there. Do
you want a Hebrew version of NT? Why not… it's there… <g>
The fact that 3DS3 network rendering will function across most
networks does not mean that it will run on the server. In this case
the server is a Windows NT server, it will support DOS workstation
connections.
