#Video Post + Layered Fog

I am trying to create a flc of an underwater scene with a Sub. I am using layered fog for the underwater effect. I would like to be able to create the FLC of the sub separately and then composite it in Videopost with the ocean bottom etc. etc. Unfortunately I can't seemed to get the layered fog to work by only applying it a Video Post time. I can only get it to work if I put all my meshes in the same scene and then use layered Fog as an atmosphere. Doing it this way increased my rendering time enormously. Is there any way to combine 2 images which have been created with background NONE and then have the layered fog blended it at Videopost time? Thanks Judy

Judy, instead of fog you could use an coloured image with a gradient mask to create your layered effect. I just tried this and it looks like it might have potential. Create a grey to black gradient (grey at bottom to black at top) in anipro or 3d Studio or anywhere. Create an image with the colour of fog you want. I chose an aqua colour. Now add this aqua image to the video post queue, for it's alpha use rgb mask and select the grey/black gradient, with intensity on.

I will give that a try and let you know how it works out. This is the first major thing I have done that really needs video post. I am doing a WWII Uboot who will come into close camer range – fire his forward tubes, be depth-charged, blow-up and sink! Don't know if I can pull it off, but the effot is very educational 🙂 Judy

Judy, >> I am doing a WWII Uboot who will come into close camer range – fire his forward tubes, be depth-charged, blow-up and sink! << You can do it Judy! Piece of cake! (dust off your IPAS routines <g>)

I still am hung up — trying to get used to the Keyframer. I think I need to pay more attention to the tutorial. I tried setting the keyframer up to 100 frames. I originall had the first FLC set at 60 Frames. I still got 60 Frames argggggggHH Is there any way I can slow the frames down by inserting extra frames in AniPRo or do I really need to figure out how to do it in the Keyframer. My problem is that I don't seem to be able to delete the keys correctly. Also in KF there seems to be now way to Start over — i.e. erase everything beyond frame 0! Thanks for your encouragement! Judy

To slow the scene down, just rescale the total number of frames with Time/Rescale. To start over, just do a NEW and keep the mesh and hierarchy. To figure all this stuff out, do the tutorials thoroughly. <g> – G

Sadly to say I tended to pay not very much attention to the keyframer tutorials — And now I am trying to learn by skimming the tutorials<g>. Judy

By the way I tried your suggestion with the gradient background. It works really great except I can figure out how to get that "thin blue haze" effect in the foreground. Or is this something you folks do in PhotoStyler ? Judy

answered your other questions nicely, I'd only re-emphasize the doing the tutorial part, and then reading the manual cover-to-cover (it's a good bedtime treat). What I suggested before should give you a foreground haze (aqua coloured image, with gradient rgb mask). Photostyler would be good for producing gradients and has more tools the 3ds for such things. I tend to think fog might be necessary for the background, too. Have you seen the shark flic on the r3 cd-rom? It may give you some ideas.

Martin : for bed time I put on Digimation's In The Studio tapes, they put me to sleep every time<BG>. Maybe I'm learning the stuff in my sleep!

Richard, >> for bed time I put on Digimation's In The Studio tapes, they put me to sleep every time << not to say they are no good or anything, but they had the same affect on me during the daytime <g>.

ME TOO! I can't remember the number of times I started watching them just to wake up two hours later looking at a snowy screen. The tapes are chock full o info, but I was looking for some more advanced help, like someone to show me how to build complex meshes or how to tackle a really big project. Now that a 3dug is just across tampa bay hopefuly I can learn from real live in person 3ds users, I felt I was learning in a void for awhile until I found compuserve and a forum full of nice, helpful, talented people, a very hard thing to find in today's crazy world. Well enuff said, I'm getting all teared up<g>.

<< complex mesh building..>> I look at professional model makers as modern skulpters. And like skulpting, having the chance to see a professional tackle a piece of complex geometry from scratch would be entertaining.. I wouldn't fall asleep.

Hi Jonas, PMJI Maybe it would foster a new type of training video tutorial. It could be something like a mini-series period piece, complete with intrigue and unsubstantiated historical (or contemporary) rumor. Then, when the networks don't know what to do with it, PBS could pick it up. "Shogun 3D", "3D Samurai", "Samurai Night 3D Sweats"…..no, that's not right, "I'll Fly Vue Away"….no, that's not right either……..hhhuuummmmmmmm? Gee, I wonder if I can write a grant for that. Just some rambling thoughts. Bryce W. (CF/X Image, Inc.)

>>having the chance to see a professional tackle a piece of complex geometry from scratch would be entertaining… Yeah buddy, periods of awe-inspiring brilliance punctuated by plenty of "oops, that didn't work" and "dang, let's try it this way"! <g> JKJ

Richard, I see the Digimation tapes as a regurgitation of the reference manual. Useful mainly for people who don't like to read or who pirated the software.

Somewhat disagree Martin. I got those tapes before purchasing 3DS last year. When I finally got 3DS hooked up and running I think that I saved an immense amount of time in understanding conceptually where I was heading. It was time and money well spent. Even now I will sit down and watch some of them again to see something I may have missed. The manuals are the best around, but with a complex system with such an open ended design, it was great to watch over someone elses shoulder. I only wish that Digimation or somebody else do a similar video on Yost and/or Schreiber IPAS routines. I can not afford the time or money to go to weeklong seminars. Most are far from where I work/live. I fact if you ever videoed some of your 3DS tricks of the trade I would probably be just as interested. At this stage I am basically a sponge trying to get as much of a foundation as possible. Cheers….SW

Martin, >> I see the Digimation tapes as a regurgitation of the reference manual. Useful mainly for people who don't like to read or who pirated the software. << I'm surprised to hear you say that. I did the R.2 tutorials cover to cover three times and made notes to put together a class I was hired to do at Fox Valley Technical College. Spent over a month on this..too! After I purchased Davids Tapes I felt upon looking at them that he presented the material in a very clear and consise manner which actually made me a bit envious of his presentation skills. If you think you can do a better job I'd be very interested in sitting down with you over the course of several weeks and Pay for the Taping provided you sign a release. Anyone that beleives there was a better way to do this must surley have that way in mind….I'd be very interested in seeing your storyboard. I'll Give Ya' 30 Days to Deliver…..OK! Let's forget about the Harley Video's and Do this Project….I'm sure we'd make a hell of a lot more money given your apparent skills. I've just talked to a friend of mine and we've got a sound stage with 4 Studio Camera's, 5 Umatics and the top O-the-Line Grass Valley Setup, Lights, Audio people and a scripter. I wanna do this now!!!! If your sure you can beat Davids efforts regarding Release 3.0 which he is just now getting ready to release. Maybe take a look at the new IPAS Routines and cover some of the new technology. What-da-ya-Say!!!!! Murph'
