Last October I saw 3D graphics at a mall in Costa Rica that did not require the use of eyeglasses. They where large ( about 12" by 18") and where mostly made of out of blue and red spots. How do they work (other than well)? Ed K.

Ed – those things are all over the place now. I first saw them in Thailand last fall… went past a bookstore and there were about 40 uniformed school kids staring at these pictures! I've since seen a lot in North America; there's even a calendar. I don't know how they're done, but they're pretty darned good… when you look at them up close, it's just very close, apparently random and repetitive patterns. Dave

Dave and Ed, Those are referred to as random dot stereograms, or RDS. Check out the Graphics developers forum here on CIS, they have a couple of shareware programs that'll make 'em. I downloaded one called RDSGEN a few months back that lets you give it a greyscale image, and it will turn it into an RDS. The darker the shade in the original image, the further that area will recede into the distance. There's even a trick that will let you use scenes done in 3DS and turn those into 3d pics.
