Hi Trent,
The Republican movement here in Australia is quite strong. Moving between
50-60% for a split from the monarchy.
Basically, the question is, what has the monarchy ever done for us except send
us to war? 😎
Sure there is a lot of sentimentality for the monarchy, but with Australia
becoming more and more multi-cultural the monarchy does not mean anything to a
large part of our population.
I support a split, might be good for the country, and the cricket will be
intresting!

It will be a sad day if Australia decides to split with the monarchy.
While I agree they have not really done anything for any of the
countries directly in a long time (at least since Victoria) and have
not had a direct say in the governing of a former colony since
Charles II, they do provide a tangible reminder that we were once
part of something greater. They give a people and a country a sense
of tradition and continuation. History for a lack of a better word.

While I could not tell if this will be true, I could not disagree,
because you may be right. It is just that it would not hurt a
country either to still be associated. Please do not get me wrong, I
am not trying to change your mind, it would just be a shame to sever
a link just because it no longer has a meaning.
Who knows, there may be a surprise in store for a lot of people. It
reminds me of a problem we have here in Canada. Quebec (our
French-Canadians) have been threatening for years to seperate and
form their own gov't. Well 4 years ago they finally brought it to a
referendum, and the seperation vote was defeated by a wide margin.
Seems there were more quiet French-Canadians that wanted to stay
within Canada than there were of the vocal Seperatists.
