Don, believe it or not, it did not occur to me to laugh at your misfortune regarding the manuals. I suppose this is another one of my alien qualities. On the contrary, I was quite sympathetic. >> This is like saying "As long as technology stands still there will be no progress and things won't change." You totally lost me on that one. <g> Technology with regard to the PAR is lateral advancement, not vertical, ie frame by frame Beta SP is still higher quality. Until this changes, there is no justification for moving with the new techology unless there is some other benefit. Which, I, you, Paul, Martin, and Alan to name a few seem to agree there is. Its in the application where we see things differently. Don, I was _NOT_ the one resposible for you're saying Diaquest was going Chapter 11!!! You must have missed that thread over the weekend. Murphy took John T. seriously about a joke John made. How you got into the picture I have no idea. You did say that in 11 months (or a year from whenever, last month) that you would be proven to be right that frame by frame was dead. You reiterated this in the last seven days to Alan I. in a comment you made to him. If you'd like I will re-post it on the forum for all to Gawk at! I think you flatter yourself to think I've made it my mission to follow you around. Now that really is funny! This whole thread is in response to your making a "list" and your claim that "frame by frame" is dead, (not dying as you claim.) That is all, no more no less! And in that comment to Alan, I took exception. And FYI, My position on the regardless of my teasing you, has not changed. Refer back to my paragraph "Technology -" I do take my understanding of the situation seriously, if you don't choose to take it seriously just because I bought a PAR, then you're definitely missing the point. Which I think you are. I think that you're argument about how you >> have been averaging 2000 frames per week for the last 4 months and I'm just plain tired of the wait. << is the _REAL_ _CORKER_ to your argument! Wake up dude! If you're rendering with a Targa and doing frame by frame its going to be faster than rendering to the PAR which will require 1.5 times as long!!! The best you can hope for is 25 seconds less than 1.5 x's faster. On the other side, the difference in rendering can become extreme. What takes 3 mins on a Targa is going to take 4.5 mins on the PAR!!!! I'll let you figure that one out for yourself. 🙂 Yes I am a secret agent but for the International Brotherhood of Animators. Our order is dedicated to the truth about animation so that unwery animators don't get stuck with equipment that isn't what they need or doesn't do what they expect. Your claim that frame by frame is dead is false, and has been challenged accordingly! Which doesn't mean that alot of people won't be lining up to buy the PAR. But the PAR's advancements are a lateral one. Not vertical as you imply. I will as I always, present all the options and the drawbacks to each approach as I see it.

So quote me! …for all to gawk at.<g> Why don't you address your assessment of the PAR "lateral" technology, Gus' accomplishments with IDE control etc. to Dave White of DPS.
#85781From: John EllisFeb 23, 1994 12:20 AM
It is not fair to suggest that because it is "lateral" technology that I am diminishing Gus's or anyone else's accomplishments. It only suggests what it is. This is the first step toward the future that both you and I would like to see. But as yet is not a replacment for "frame by frame" at Beta SP quality. Say what you will, but until this is a reality, frame by frame is not dead. You could just as easily have said "frame by frame" was dead with the introduction of the Abekas, which is no more true than your statement. But I've made my point and unless you would like to pursue this further, I'll drop it.

>>But I've made my point and unless you would like to pursue this further, I'll drop it. I said you can have the last word and you have. Thank you Now I have to get to work and pay for this PAR.

I agree that the PAR is not a replacement for frame by frame. For my purposes it performs fantastically, but even to my untrained eye SOME complex scenes suffer the effects of JPEG artifacts. I have not fully tuned my system to its fullest potential, but I feel that frame by frame or uncompressed video will produce noticebly better output on those complex scenes. I have to agree that frame by frame will not die until losless realtime output becomes more affordable… –Nat'n

Thankyou Nathan, you've managed to say with one paragraph, what I've been trying to say with pages and pages of messages! Amazing! Thankyou for your candor.

good to see you in the forum. If you set your date back a week and search for the subject "PAR News Flash!" you'll be able to enjoy the debate between a number of ASOFT veterans.

Dave, I got great tech support today from your people and am now enjoying some of the finest chromes and reflections I've ever seen. Looks like I'm going to have to save my money now for a BVM 1912 so I can see all these artifacts everybody keeps talking about. <G> I am running the PAR continuously and the only glitch is every 12 minutes the PAR has a white flash interupting the animation playback when the drive does a Tcal. There is a noticeable improvement over my targa+ output. PS: sorry if I got a little testy at Video expo in December. I was really trying to pick this PAR apart and the star artifact was the only thing I could find that didn't look right. I've since confirmed this can be repeated frame by frame using motion blur and field rendering, so I apologize for my persistance at the show.
