Help, I just installed a Maxtor MXT-540A drive in a 4000/40 and I am having problems. I can copy data to the drive and a LIST or DIR looks correct, however when I try to use any of the files they are corupt. Everything went as normal with the install and format. I have found that if I TURN OFF FastFileSystem then the drive will work, but is so slow that it is of no value to me (I want to use it with the Sunrise 516). I thought I heard of a problem like this a year or so ago, but I don't remember any details. Any help would be appreciated. Doug

What parity setting on the drive do you have (Enabled or disabled)? I seem to remember that the Amiga wants SCSI parity disabled and that is not the default for drives I've seen. Hope this helps. -J

Doug, Try setting the MAXTRANSFER value for the drive's partition(s) to 0x1fffE. Use HDToolbox, under advanced options. -Jim

Jim, you are right, I needed to change the maxtransfer. The DMA mask also needed to be changed to 0xfffffff. Thanks for your help. Doug

Do you know whether that drive is supposed to work with Amigas? IDE drives are often hosed for Amiga use. A PC program exists which accelerates PC IDE use and, incidentally, can test for compatibility with the Amiga. (If it is compatible with this software, it is compatible with the Amiga). Dale, thanks for the info, I got the drive working correctly by changinf the maxtransfer and dma mask. It works very well now and really flies. Doug

Cool. Do you have some DiskSpeed 4.2 numbers? If you don't mind me asking, what did that drive set you back? I've decided to go the 4091/Gig drive route, but I was thinking seriously about going for a larger IDE drive. The compatibility issues made it difficult to price drives — the Amiga dealers charge incredibly inflated prices, and the ComputerShopper cheap drive houses could care less about Amiga compatibility.
