#Pentium 75, 90, or 100?

Hi, I am about to purchase a Pentium based system for 3DS. Given the same amount of ram (16mb) & disk performance does anyone have any opinion regarding performance differences between a Pentium 75, 90, or 100Mhz system for 3DS. Cost considerations are leaning towards a P75 but I might consider spending a little extra money if there is a "substantial" difference in rendering speed, etc. Thanks for any insight! Regards, Craig Meadows

Crieg, The more memory you have the better. I have a pentium 90 and I would recieve more speed if I had 32 megs instead of 16. I wonder if a 486/66 would out do my pentium if it had 32 megs. The more memory will not help on small files but as soon as 3ds has to access the disk it slows way down. Does anyone have a test file to use I would love to compare my Pentium/16 megs against a 486/66/32 megs. Anyone ????? Mike

Why not. Do you have a mesh in mind? I'm sure Chapel or something could be set to use around 30Mb of RAM. I can guarantee the P90 will outperform my 66 even with the paging though. I'll bet it's still better than 2X faster. But an interesting test anyway. LEt me know. DM

I got a 486 dx4/100 with 32 megs and its about 2xfaster in 3ds than a Pentium90 with 8megs. Memory is the key for speed in 3DS, so if you can safe a few $ with buying a pentium 75 instead a 100 and spend it on memory instead you have the better machine. Teut

I rendered Chapel.3ds from the WCT CDROM on my 486/66/32 meg in 14:34 minutes. Memory used = 27080, Swap=0. Some extra time might be involved from my old SONY CD Drive, Single speed, when readying the materials. I used all the file defaults: 800×600 Null Display Alpha=Yes Camera View This can serve as a benchmark against the system I am currently building: Micronics P90-512k Cache 64 meg RAM Seagate Barracuda 2 gig NEC Quad Speed CD Adaptec SCSI NEC 21XP Monitor I'll post my times on this machine when it is completed.
