#S3d vs. other 3D pkgs
6 messages in this thread
I haven't seen a relply to my previous post, so I decided to take a gamble &
buy Simply 3D today – afterall, for $59 what did I have to lose?
I've just begun looking over the documentation & so far it appears it may meet
my specific needs – I'm gald to see the AVI support for animations. I was
kinda shocked though to see the system requirements: at least a 25M Permanent
Swap File, and 8M RAM at a minimum. I have the 8M, but will have to reclaim
some disk space for that humongo swap file (sounds like an OS/2 pig). Anyway,
I'm gonna give it a shot.
I also discovered an ad for the Visual Reality product which appears to be
priced more in line with trueSpace. Is Simply 3D just a scaled down ("special
edition") of VR? What makes VR better than Simply 3D?
Michael: George has the full version, and I have S3D, but I'll give you a short
answer. There is much more to the bigger program. I have a demo of VR and it
looks pretty good to me. In my demo, there are several room renderings that
look
quite realistic.
I believe if you look back at message #2668, there is a description of the
full product… also somewhere there is a note about a special offer for
purchasers of S3D, for VR, and I believe the price was under $300…
>> Visual Reality lists at $595, but Simply 3D users can upgrade to VR for
only $239. Call our marketing office at (800) 669-7318 for more info. << Found
it, message #3008.

Thanks for the info on VR / S3D.
Hi Michael:
You're right that Simply 3D is a scaled down version of Visual Reality. On the
rendering side, the Visual Reality version of Renderize Live supports Bump
Mapping and Environmental Reflection Mapping for added photorealism, DXF import
for broader model compatibility, and a feature to fix backfacing polygons.
Renderize Live for Visual Reality also supports still frame or animation output
to any resolution; Renderize Live EZ, in Simply 3D, limits still frame
renderings to 640×480 and animations to 320×240.
Visual Reality also includes two applications not included in Simply 3D.
Visual Model is a full-featured polygonal modeler. Features include polygon
and polyline tools, basic shapes, solids, boolean operations, extrusion,
extrusion along a user-defined path, sweep, spiral, etc. Visual Model is an
excellent for most modeling operations.
Visual Reality also includes Visual Image a layered bitmap image editor.
Visual Image's particular strength is the ability to keep each of your changes
on a different "layer" over the original "background" image, such that you can
delete or modify your changes as desired without losing anything.
Visual Reality lists for $595.00. The upgrade from Simply 3D to Visual Reality
costs $239. At $59, Simply 3D lets you get your feet wet in 3D without the
risk. And with the inexpensive upgrade to Visual Reality, we've made the
investment even safer.
I hope this information helps.

Do I understand this correctly? Can I buy Simply 3D for $59 and upgrade to VR
for $239, for a total cost of $298?
Thanks so much for the explanation on the differences between Simply 3D & VR.
I've been playing around with S3D & so far am impressed with what it can do,
but as you say it is limited. For my needs I'm most likely going to need the
modelling component that comes with VR to do anything substantive. The upgrade
price is attractive & makes looking at VR a definite.
Thanks again for clarifying these 2 products for me.
