ER/ Video for Windows users under Windows NT (3.1 & 3.5) have probably noticed that they are unable to load or save AVI movies. This is due to a couple of things: 1. Windows NT 3.1 does not support Video for Windows 2. Windows NT 3.5 DOES support VFW but its now in a new 32-bit flavor so current support for VFW 16-bit will not work. So what does all this mean? We are currently developing 32 bit Video Windows support for our Windows NT customers (NT 3.1 owners will need to upgrade to 3.5) and they are being tested now and will be available shorly. We will also have FLC/FLI loading finished soon so stay tuned. FLC saving is now available and can be downloaded from our vendor library here in this forum. Chris Edgin ERI Tech.

Programs run faster under NT not to mention the fact that NT 3.5 is much more stable than Windows and you dont have to worry about conventional memory anymore and NT is much easier to install and does not have compatibility problems w/ video cards. Chris Edgin ERI Tech.

>>Programs run faster under NT<< PC Magazine says that's not a safe blanket statement to make. They just benchmarked Excel 5 and Word 6 in both W4Workgroups and NT 3.5. The 16 bit versions under W4W beat the NT versions handily. 16 bit Word even beat the native NT app when both were running under NT. Your mileage may vary, but don't believe the hype without looking behind it. Did y'all do a 16 bit compile of ER?

Producing a 16 bit version of Elastic Reality really wasn't a possibility. This is so for many reasons including (1) Elastic Reality is a cross platform product who's code must be shared across platforms which have no concept of 16 versus 32 bit apps (and instead use flat memory models) and (2) the internals of Elastic Reality thoroughly depend upon really big numbers and really small numbers…both dependencies making the use of 16 bit arithmetic (even for the simulations of floating point) into a seriously difficult task. While it may not be, as you say, right to make a blanket statement about all apps running faster under NT, we can say that Elastic Reality is already 32 bit and any work to make it back into a 16 bit application would simply get in the way of our producing new *and different* products without much gain. just a quick note regarding your update for NT 3.5 VFW drivers. The read.me file says to change the aviset32.dll to aviset.dll but when running er, it looks for aviset32.dll. just thought to let you know keith

Chris, on a slightly different topic, will you be providing OS/2 versions? …and I don't mean Windows Video under OS/2… Regards, Wolly

Thats a good one. No announcements have been made here regarding a native OS/2 version of ER but that does not necessarily mean that our planners aren't thinking about it. If I hear something about i, I will let you know. Chris Edgin Technically Speaking
