#Compatible backup?

After a scary episode of what looked like a harddrive crash with no recent
backup, I am taking immediate steps to get some kind of large scale backup
system. I am considering the Python streaming tape, which offers 525 meg
tapes that price out about three-quarters less than Bernoulli cartridges.
My question is:
Do you know if the Python is compatible with the GVP Series II 68030
accellerator/harddrive controller? Also, as I only have the SCSI
controller in this hardware on my A2000, is it feasible/acceptable/crazy
to backup my 1 gig drive on my scsi-less A4000 via ParNet?!!

In my daily talk with Newtek Tech Support, I was told that Toaster 4.0
will have a disk backup utility. It is designed to work with most SCSI
peripherals and optimize the backup procedure for the proprietary file
format Newtek uses for the Flyer video clips.
I suspect this utility will be better than any existing ones, considering
how slow they seem to be in backing up and restoring files to the Flyer
drives.
The best backup so far seems to be Diavolo, here on CIS. But the Newtek
solution will definitely be optimized for the Flyer files.

Two questions: Can you back up your flyer drives with Diavolo/HDBackup/Qb via a
non-NewTek SCSI or do you have to connect your tape to the NewTek SCSI?
Does the CDROM need to be connected to the Flyer SCSI?
Basically I have an accelerator with SCSI that I'd like to keep system
peripherals on and leave the FLyer SCSI's for just video and audio.

Thank you, but I feel I should be upfront about this before you expend any
further energies… Bill Chadwick and I are going in on this purchase together
to share the device, and he will be ordering whatever unit we go with. Since
he did not know about the compatibility with my GVP, I threw the question out
here on the nets and to your attention specifically as you do seem to have a
good handle on these things. However, I am very sensitive to the issue of
dealers being called upon for support, while the actual sales go to the larger,
cheaper wholesale houses. I respect and appreciate all that you share with us,
but I would feel guilty if I led you to do any extra legwork or phonecalls on
my behalf in this instance.

Hi Sean –
No problem. Current recommendations, based on speed and price/capacity,
seem to favor DAT drives. The only one my suppliers carry presently is the
Python 4GB DAT drive. It has a retail price of $1,400. Be wary of drives
promoting higher capacity, since they are probably referring to their
capacity using compression which is not appropriate with Flyer video
clips.
Further, Newtek tells me that with the release of 4.0, there will be a
backup utility which will be designed to work specifically with the
Flyer's video clip file structure and will probably work much faster than
currently available software.
Otherwise, most DAT drives and Exabyte systems will provide backup, but
accounts lead me to believe they are slower than they have to be.
