#Humanoid/KineModelz News
12 messages in this thread
The most current information on HUMANOID and KINEMODLEZ can now be found in the
ANVENA (Animation Vendor A +) Forum in the NEW ANIM. VENDORS Library. These are
motion-ready models designed especially for doing 3D character animation,
effects and simulations in Imagine. You can use the keyword CRESTLINE to search
and bring up all the relevant files. There are sample images of the Humanoid
family (man, woman, child & strongman), morph targets of facial expressions,
and walk and run poses; And text files with detailed information about
Humanoid, and the progress on development of KineModelz.
If you have any further questions about Humanoid or KineModelz, please feel
free to post them as Forum Messages in the ANVENA/NEW ANIM. VENDORS section.
This will be Crestline Software's temporary home until our *own* section is set
up for support in ANVENA.

Tim,
I noticed that you have the child model depicted in one of the renders you
uploaded. Have the child objects been sent out yet to registered users of your
Humanoid software?

software?<<
No, not to Imagine users. My plan was to handle the Imagine 3.xx upgrades and
delivery of Child in one fell swoop. As mentioned in my earlier `Humanoid
Update' in GUGRPA, I do have a `Cycle-baby' that I can send out to individuals
who get antsy in the meantime.
But I want you and other Imagine users to be aware of something. Your upgrade
for 3.xx is going to be *free*, and it will include as much IK support as I can
manage. I'm doing this out of guilt just for Imagine users, and its going to
cost me, but I think Imagine users deserve it as a reward for their
extraordinary patience. I've been so tardy in keeping them up to date. And I
promised free upgrades to 3.0 for them. In retrospect, it was a mistake for me
to ship the Imagine sets before the Child models were done, and to offer the
free upgrade. But I was a bit green back when those decisions were made, and
just starting my business. I was obviously way too optomistic, and promised
things I couldn't deliver as quickly as I thought. (However, I think I've
turned over a new leaf on this. You'll notice that all the remarks I've made
about KineModelz have been *extremely* tentative, even though *inside* I'm very
enthusiastic about their potential.) In additon, I got off the track a bit on
the Imagine format when the Amiga began to have its troubles. To stay in
business, I had to put more of my focus onto the other formats. That's part of
the reason why its taken me so long to get back to this.
I don't see any point in releasing a non-IK version of Humanoid for Imagine,
and then charge an additional fee for the IK support. There isn't enough
traffic on the Imagine version to warrant this. Furthermore, there is no way I
could do a States version of Humanoid *without* IK support. The IK in Imagine
is going to be largely user defined, because there currently is no way to save
the IK Constraints with an Imagine object. The Constraints have to be reset
each time you load the figure. So my `support' for IK in this new version will
be largely in the form of documentation.
Regardless of the IK issue, the models still had to be completely reworked for
States, to get rid of all the old Cycle nonsense. And I think most users will
find them much easy to use in this next incarnation. Once I have the 3.xx
version done, I plan (not promise, mind you) to do a slight price-hike in the
software, so it may be to some Imagine users' advantage to buy the software
now, and get the free upgrade.
I'm still working on the 3.xx upgrade but it should be done shortly. My only
problem now is figuring out whether to wait and ship the updates on CD-ROM, or
just bite the bullet and send floppies. As I hope you can tell, there's a lot
more involved in these updates than simply `finishing the new version'. For one
person it's a lot of work. Perhaps someday I'll simply be able to use my mental
powers to `will' the upgrades directly to people, or one day I'll be rich
enough to get someone else to do all the grunt work. But it don't look like
that's gonna happen anytime soon.
A rather long winded explanation for a simple question, but I think you're
entitled.

Tim,
Thanks for the very informative message. Your thoroughness in your replies, as
always, is cery much appreciated.
I also want to say thank-you for your generous upgrade policy for the Imagine
3.xx versions of Humanoid.
I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with next in your Kinemodelz.
I'm sure it'll be dazzling, to say the least.

Tim,
As you know we are interested in your product on CD-ROM. We are using
LightWave 3D on the AMIGA and soon on the PC. Are your models completely
usable in LightWave?
Thanks,

Michael?… Why are you askin' this stuff in the *Impulse* forum? <grin>. You
aren't by any chance one of those closet Imagine users, are you? <Big Grin>
Ahaaa!….. that's why you're hangin' out over here. You're busted! <Big Grin
Again>
But seriously folks… until I get my CRESTLINE section setup, it would help me
if you posted your LW questions either in the ANVENA/ NEW ANIM. VENDORS section
(my temporary home, where I'm trying to build up a following to impress the CIS
staff), or in the AMIGAVENDOR/ NEW TEK section. The latter is, of course, where
most of the LW action is, and I think you may be missing out on some of the
current LW stuff if you don't cruise on over there once in awhile.
To answer your question, my models are *completely* usable in LW. In fact, I
spent several months doing the port to work out any kinks. Each different
format of the models is sold separately. And the one for LW works great.
The reason I hang out in the Imagine forums so much is that it's the principal
3D animation program I use in my *own* production work. If you aren't a closet
Imagine user yet, you should give it a try, (Don't tell the folks over at New
Tek I said that though <g>) and Animation Master as well, for that matter.
These are my two personal favs. No offense against LW, mind you. It's a
wonderful program as well, it's just not *my* personal cup a' tea. But those
Foundation Imaging guys certainly know how to make it sing.
– Tim (And please don't take my editorializing too seriously, it's intended all
in good fun.)
Tim,
your reply to Michael Miloff piqued my curiosity. I'm a longtime Imagine user,
with decent knowledge about other software (including Lightwave), but whose
knowledge primarily comes from reading magazines. This means I'm vulnerable to
hype and the "let's sweep those faults under the rug" attitude which may
prevent me from getting the full picture of what it's like to work with some of
those other software packages.
I'd love to hear why, after using Lightwave, you actively prefer Imagine. Sure,
LW users who prefer Imagine's modeler are common, but your opinion is very
interesting.
Since your reply will be a boon to Impulse, I'll leave this request in their
public section, rather than bring this into C-mail.
Blaq!
I answers 'em where I finds 'em.
But thanks for the re-direction.
If Imagine updates to support the Flyer I'll take a serious look at it.

Okay,… but in the meantime, don't blame me if you miss out. <g>

Hey Tim,
Here's another one that should be elsewhere.
What about compatibilty or convertability with Animation Master on the PC?
Russ Spencer / Michael Miloff & Associates
>>What about compatibility or convertibility with Animation Master on the PC?<<
Michael,
AM converts each poly into a patch, so loading the Humanoid models directly
would result in woefully overcomplex objects, unless they were run through some
significant type of optimization beforehand. Hash advises bringing only
`simple' polygonal objects into AM for this reason. In addition, you'd have to
reconstruct the hierarchy, and wouldn't be able to take advantage of AM's
seamless joining of limbs without significant editing of the geometry
It is my hope eventually to release some models in AM's native spline format.
But don't postpone any of your projects in anticipation of this. Anything else?
-Tim
Thanks for the answers. I'll get back to you later.
